Hi,
I have just been to the butcher to get a weeks supply of meat and bones but they were out of chicken carcasses. He said they had duck carcasses so I got some of those and then realised I wasn't sure if they were OK to feed. I assume they are ok but thought I had better check-better safe than sorry.
Thanks in advance for your help

you can feed any type of carcass, although do be carfull if you
feed turcky, as it has been known to cause pancritus (sp),
as turckys have a high fat content.

Hi everybody, I was wondering if you can help me. Iam due to get my DH puppy in the first week of december.

When you refer to feeding carcasses, how do you prepare the carcasses - I assume that you do not just give them the carcasse in case the bones stick in the throat - does it have to be pulvarised etc?

Also what dry food would you recommend for the puppy to try and give him a balanced diet?

Many moons ago I used to keep lurchers and we never feed carcasses although we did feed cooked tripe etc.

Thanks for all the advice.

With my adult dogs i just feed them whole,
a puppy i would think - if just starting out,
i would feed wings and necks first, then move on to the carcasses,
once its used to chewing them properly, you could cut one in half if there to large.

My dogs all get a whole chicken carcass or whole rabbit carcass three times a week.

Bernard tends to eat like a Labrador, so I give his frozen; it slows him down a bit!

My pup started out on necks and wings, like chook suggested.

I also feed lots of lamb flaps (the rib section), and lamb necks. Any bones that are non-weight bearing are great to feed, because they will crumble, not splinter.

Keep in mind that chicken carcasses have little calcium, as the chickens are slaughtered young, before the calcium is "set" in the bones. That makes the bones very soft, and a great source of chondroitin (ie. great for joints and great for arthritic dogs)

ETA: Just saw you were asking about a good dry food. I have found Eagle Pack Holistic Giant Breed Puppy to be excellent.

I am amazed to read how many folks now seem to feed dogs poultry bones. We were always told never to feed poulty bones incase they splinter and cause problems in the gullet.Does anyone else remember that?

Thats only cooked, in a raw state they are fine and easily digestable,
cooked bones can not be digested and can splinter.

Yeah I do, I never give mine any bones apart from beef bones. But they all seem to get along fine with the poultry bone thing, though another thing I would be too afraid to do!!

We have always fed them, i can remember my dad used to get 50lbs of chicken wings
for the dogs and they would enjoy a wing or two a day as a treat,
they was human grade as well, so if we wanted to have some cooked we could,
mine used to eat lamb ribs, all poltary (sp), pidgon when i can get hold of it
and rabbit, this morning for breakfast they had small chicken carcases,
layla had about 4 and the rest had 3 each,
i only feed beef bones as a treat and to give them something to knaw on,
but only occasionaly as they can cause damage to there teeth,

lamb ribs can be good for keeping teeth clean as well.

We feed lots of raw chicken and lamb which the dogs seem to enjoy and (touch wood) no trouble. The only problem with the chicken, partularly in the summer, is that it goes off so quickly so you have to be careful with it.

Hi Bravehearttte

For your puppy try to stick with what your breeder recommends. But if you do want to change things in the longer term dry/complete food which is good is Burns www.burnspet.co.uk/ or Luath www.landofholisticpets.co...ngredients.htm. Elise
