I would be interested to see pictures of dogs that people felt were their "ideal" or "best" example of a Deerhound.

I had a discussion with a good friend recently and he felt that the dog pictured below was close to his ideal.

I would love to see what other people thought.

Well it's just lovely that you think your dogs are the best examples of the Deerhound breed.

I think my three Deerhounds are lovely, but they are certainly not the best examples of the breed I have seen.

I had hoped to learn a bit about different Deerhounds and what attributes experienced Deerhound people see in different dogs....

We may have even had some healthy debate about what constitutes an exceptional Deerhound while comparing each dog to the Breed Standard, but instead, let's turn it into a pedestrian, jokey pat-on-the-back about what we have in our own backyards, rather than what we may aspire to for the Breed.

Okay if you want a really serious debate two current dogs I really like are Ch. Wolfscastle Wood Melick and Lyart Yes Minister, two dogs that I think are very, very nice and cover all the points in the breed standard (which is interpreted differently by different people, which is why we don’t have the same dogs winning all the time!)

It’s a shame that you take exception to having a bit of a jest. I’m sure a lot of people later in the day, when more are on-line would have given you a more serious answer.

Sues dog Rannoch, fit for purpose with a temperament second to none. What else can I say.

Bryns mum is the runtiest, would be laughed out the ring, Deerhound around. But she's an ace pet and a great companion. Horses for courses

I adore the coat of Killoeter Leyla, see Killoeter website for a fantastic picture. Also Beardswood Ghille is a nice looking dog.

I agree totally with this sentiment. Unfortunately in our modern, politically correct world Deerhounds are unable to live for the reason for which they were bred. I agree totally that we should still try to preserve this purpose but it is difficult. Chasing a Rabbit or lure is noway as testing as chasing a full grown stag.

The deerhound's salvation is in the showring and as a companion and family pet and to totally disregard this and cast them only in the light that they were once bred for is just being in denial.

There has been a small debate before on type,
to me some of the ones you see in the show ring now a days are way to heavy
i like the old working type, unfortunaly now a days, there verry rarly seen.

My favourite deerhound has got to be Ch Kilbourne Nimrod.

PDR_1472.jpg

I love his size and substance, and the fact that he doesn't look as though he'd fall over in a gust of wind.

Another deerhound I admire is Ch Wild West von der Oelmuehle.

When Sue Phillips bred West to Nimrod's daughter, Ch Ladygrove Spook, I was happy to have one of the pups sent to me in Canada.

Ladygrove Rufus Buck from Kilbourne.

We're talking about ideal deerhounds here, because of course I think they're all perfectly lovely, but ideally, I don't like small deerhounds nor ones that are too dainty. Not for me - not my ideal.

Sorry, I had pictures of Nimrod and West in the first two spaces but didn't work out in the post. I give up! If only we could see the pictures in the "preview" these errors might be avoided. Ideally speaking of course

Hi Nat,
I thought your post was a good idea, and I know you are keen to learn. Anyway, up 'til recently Pam and I thought that Gr. Ch. Glassonby Skylark was the best dog for conformation we ever owned, here is a pic of her at The Deerhound Club of Victoria Champ Show 2005 ( Pam has been editted out of it ) Lark got BIS

Right - To cover all bases, I've gone for dogs, pups and bitches, all of whom I would love to own. And finish off with the obvious.

I agree that Rannoch (Gentiehun Tain) is VERY special, and will surely be made up next year as he's coming into his prime in my opinion. Was a brilliant day when he gor his first RCC recently. I also love Tavish (Lyart Yes Minister), Rannoch's sire.

Not only are they gorgeous (and very different) examples, but both of these dogs' temperaments are second to none.

I know I'm biased but my Mara (Killoeter Paabay) is really starting to take after another mentioned previously - her mum Killoeter Leyla, who is possibly the most regal looking bitch I've seen - certainly has the nicest feet (Oh no, not the feet debate again!). Mara's litter sister Pieris at Canerikie is shaping up really nicely too.

But for temperament I can't see past my favourite girl Poppy (Killoeter Kyla): a matronly girl who rules her pack beautifully. I would LOVE to bring her home for 6 months or so to sort my two bampots out. But I can't see Sue letting me somehow!

Finally, from afar (I haven't met him so can't comment on the temperament) but Gentom Peacemaker is just stunning.

I've been thinking about this one. There are a few dogs whom I always keep in mind as examples of what I'm looking for when I'm judging, and they're not necessarily the big winners of their own generation. They're, in no particular order, Ch Ardkinglas Nina, her half sister Ch Rosslyn Carric, Carric's son Ch Killoeter Onich, Ardkinglas Ace, Fritzen's Highland Ghillie, Lua of Kenstaff, Ch Shenval Hyperion, Killoeter Ichor and my own Lyart Lyra Belacqua, who sadly died before she came to her best. Not all the same type by any means, some big ones, some not so big, but all were Deerhounds and couldn't be mistaken for any other breed. Current favourites include Ch Pyefleet Rokesby, Ch Gentom Peacemaker and his dad Ch Wild West von der Oehlmuhle. I'd be hard pushed to name just one out of these as my all time favourite.

Lyart Yes Minister (Tavish) would love to claim the splendid Gentiehun Tain (Rannoch) as his son, since they're best mates, but Rannoch's real dad is Fritzen's Rannoch, a son of Highland Ghillie. Tav is Foxy and Fluffy's dad.

I have loved all of my Deerhounds, but I know which are the best ones I have bred that conform to the standard, it did not mean I loved them anymore , I have loved them all the same

In my nearly 30 years in the breed the most outstanding bitch I have ever seen was without doubt Ardkinglas Val

Ch Rotherwood Betsinda comes very close
rotherwood_betsinda_cups.jpg

I will list some others in preference order
and Dog hounds when time permits

I think this could be a very educational thread if allowed to be, I would like to know the name of the first hound posted

This was at the time when the few breeder that had hounds were working very hard to standardize the breed therefore Rhyme was priceless in genetic terms, however hounds have improved over the years Rhyme is very week in his rear end , he has poor width of thigh and very high hocks , he also lacks bend to the stifle, his front assembly is poorly angulated
and his ribbing shallow, his type is Superb, and he was a very valueable hound genetically
