TOPIC: Coats

Coats 2 years, 5 months ago #17314

Hi, I don't know if anyone can help, but I need to get hold of a deerhound sized coat, preferably weatherproof and fleece lined. We've cut our woolies fur down, but we've had a slight accident with her coat, so now it's pretty much unusable. Her last coat was an extra large greyhound coat, 33 or 35 inches, I think, but it was hardly ideal, and it shrank a bit in the wash.

So, if anyone knows where I can get one in the UK, preferably online, since I don't think I'll be able to get anywhere until well after xmas, that would be great.

I had mine measured & hand made by “Oridgenals”, Bespoke dog coats & embroidery by Carol Ann Carlton, 4 Bellingham Place, Biggleswade, SG18 0PP, 01767 310 087 or 07818 015069
it was made to measure, quick & well made.

Thanks for the help, but my sister has just read this over my shoulder and told me that she'll make some for us. So now we're just going to fight over colours. And someone else who shall remain nameless mentioned legwarmers! It's not that cold here, but I think it might be funny to see

Thanks again. I'll try and post some photos when we get them done (decided on more than one so we can rotate the washing, mucky, mucky weather)

Hi there, claire cartmell also has coats of all sizes and colours that she sells to raise funds for the dog rescue.

Claire can be contacted through her website www.cusidh.co.uk

Here's Banrigh modelling one of the coats available from Claire. There's also some black and red waterproof gortex ones which also have a fur lining. Elise

PS Hettie, the lurcher in the background, also has her own coats - just in case you thought she was neglected! She's just made of tougher stuff today.

Banrigh looks great in that!! does the coat stop any free movement when running?

Hi Sukimilne

No the coat doesn't stop free movement when running. However, if running hard I'm not sure the coat would be 100 % secure. These designs don't have the cross over straps which go round the back legs. However, for what I use the coats for they stay put. I tend to use them for slower walks/runs or for when we've been out running and I don't want the dogs to get chilled if they're then standing around a lot or are transferred into a car. Elise

Gonna make myself unpopular here I know but I really struggle with dogs and coats....its a childhood thing I think ......round where I lived the only folk who had dog coats were scotty dog owners and the dogs always seemed really snappy(nothing against breed of the dogs I promise) and the coats were always either red tartan or really tastless bright colours.......sorry folks!
I know all the rational reasons for them make sense but I just cant get over the negative memories!

Try the Outward Hound Designer Rain Jacket. It keeps them warm and dry and it comes in a large enough size.

I'm a bit puzzled here, why would a Deerhound need a jacket? A Whippet or a Greuhound or a short coated lurcher yes, but a Deerhound!! If they have the correct coat they will live quite happily in the cold, afterall the Highlands of Scotland are not exactly noted for their balmy climate.

I put a coat on our pup when she was very young as her coat was short and she was underweight. It also meant I didn't have to look at her topline, which, at the time was HIDEOUS!!!!

The only other time I have put a coat on my dogs is if we are camping outside overnight in the snow.

I just use them to help the dogs warm up or cool down more easily in the cold weather after or before running or going out with the bikes. Most athletes warm up/cool down by progressively adding or taking away layers so I just think it helps the dogs too to avoid injuries etc.

Also if a dog has had to be clipped coats are invaluable. We had a whippet cross poodle lurcher and she definately felt the cold a great deal when she'd be clipped.

But I'm certainly with Chilliwoman on the scotty dog coats!

Coats are a complete time SAVER!!!!!!

Drying 3 and a half soaking wet hairy so and sos twice a day is not amusing!
It also means the older and now very hairy lady is not left damp all day long as she now takes a long time to dry and has a little arthritis.

Why would you not???

iam with you, with 4 hairy mutts saves heaps of time!!!

Re:Coats 2 years, 4 months ago #17803

meant to say i have fleece lined waterproof coat with cross over belts which stop slipping as much, will take photo for you.

Re:Coats 2 years, 4 months ago #17819

Why do you need a coat - If you were at Livingston today you would know why, it was 3 1/2 hours of lying about for the dogs today with a huge roller door open so it cold as they day wore on and even the hairy hounds were feeling it.

Also, have to agree with Elise, in this weather I like to take my dogs for a long brisk walk with their coats on before letting them loose for a run about. They then have a long walk home and it keeps them warm.

Wet weather - need I say more!!

Personal choices for everyone, but we are defo jacket folk.
