Can't say I'm an expert but I hear lots of people say that you shouldn't strip a Deerhound, I've never stripped mine. I've always found that its best to do a little at a time but do it often. I just use a bristle brush and then comb out the tangles and loose down. I use a metal comb and also a plastoc one in places where my dog is sensitive to which in his case is his face and front neck.
If any badly matted bits develop I just pull the matted fur apart with my fingers to losen it and then just pull or comb it out.
Well that's my experiences to start with but I guess that you'll get plenty more tips from people more experienced than myself.
