Does anyone know how fast these dogs are? Are they likely to be as kind as a pure bred d hound? Any info and opinions welcome.Just had a litter of 4 and wonder if I should keep one.

Hard working and rather clever i would imagine

The only 'problem' i have ever had with collies is constant 'bizziness' right im here whats next what we doin etc etc but its not something i have ever found annoying and actually love that collie trait of being raring to go all the time!
they are just very very keen, never had a collie x dh lurcher tho, mine were a collie x greyhound/whippet i think and a collie x samoyd (very very clever and would play 24/7 given the chance!)

Sounds a lovley cross any pics of the young'uns?

Claire

No pics yet but am working on it. Pups look very similar to the litter of deerhounds elsewhere on this forum but with more white on feet.

I've not seen this particular cross , but do have both breeds of dog.
I would think it would be a nice cross if you get the best of both breeds.
My wife and I have often joked about crossing my Deerhound dog with her collie bitch.
They would certainly be exceptional looking pups.

If your concerned about speed , I'm guessing your thinking about hunting.
Certainly collies are fast compared to most dogs, but not as fast as Deerhounds, and Deerhounds are not as fast or manouverable as whippets or greyhounds.

From what I have seen , a Collie x Deerhound, is not going to be as fast as Collie X Greyhound. That said, Deerhounds are quite capable of catching rabbits in large open fields.

On the kindness front, I guess it really depends on the parents.

No sorry had one too many beers they are great.Just starting to go grey in coat at 6 weeks but still tiny.Looking at Ardneish's video's of a couple of days ago they are about the same size and ability of a 4 weeks old deerie. Is this normal?

Oh Hairybeasty. Our first Lurcher was a Deerhound x Greyhound x Collie. When we were looking, before we got Murphy, it is what we actually wanted. Think Speed of a greyhound, body of a Deerhound and strength and the brains of a collie. The most obedient, kindest dog I have owned, yes I love Murph to bits, but as for obedience forget it.
Would be out hunting during the day and come home and have a baby crawling all over him, never a growl. My husband would get another one tomorrow if he could. You will not be dissapointed, easily trainable.
If my children were eating, he would be as far away as possible, never stole a thing, never needed a lead, would come if you clicked your fingers......am laughing as I type this, thinking of the Deerhound!

I have some pics of our Lurcher. When he died, my daughter wrote him letters! so sad, she had never experienced death before, she grew up with him, she was a baby when we got him, he died when she was 12.

That is a sad story Lurch but character building none the less. If our dogs lived as long as we do we would never learn as much..

That's good looking dog Lurch.

Re:Deerhound x collie lurchers 2 years, 3 months ago #19640

We've had many dogs over the years, we had 2 of the above and several greyhounds, but this big fella always sticks in my mind, he was so loved, well they all were, but he has to be our perfect dog, one of a kind. Good luck with the puppies, I am sure you will find you have a fantastic litter there, with the right training I am pretty sure you are going to be pleased. Our fella grew to 28".
