As for the cat question, it all depends on the dog
layla couldnt care less about cats, inside or out.

Lokis not bothered by cats when out and about but that may well be because we have one in the house anyway.

As for the blogs i was going to start one for the three monsters i have here but didn't think anyone would bother reading it

Very much depends on the Dog and it's training

We see cats on the way to our fields, Murphy just has a craft glance, though to be honest, if it were to run it might be a different story.
I use a Halti on him though, he would drag me all over the place to see another dog.

Ben's fine with our cat and when out walking just looks but doesn't pull. If one runs across his path then that's a different matter and he'll pull like mad to follow it.

Worst he's pulled lately was when a squirrel jumping from branch to branch fell to the ground 3ft in front of us and then legged it. Thought I was going to be dragged up the tree.

All depends on training as CiCoch says.
This is known as "stock breaking" and all dogs must be taught what is "on the menu" and what is not. This should include cats, sheep, and other livestock,it is up to you what you allow them to chase, not the dog.
I had an embarrasing and expensive walk one day, with 2 rescue dogs, who ran off for 9 days.
It cost me £800 in dead sheep,so I cannot stress how important "stock breaking" is.
Oh,and by the way,I had to destroy both dogs after the event.

Murray will try and chase cats so I bought a stubber lead for him as he is very strong. Carys couldnt care less as our Sydney kitten is her new best friend I have to choose my route carefully and keep my fingers crossed that he doesnt see any cats or squirrels

I find it easier to get a sighthound to comply to a "release" word, rather than a recall command. (That said, my three DH's have excellent recall, but I doubt I would have 100% recall if they were on to something). Best not to start something you cannot stop.

If my dogs spot something they may like to chase (be it a cat, native animal etc), then they will wait for me to say the "release" word. Of course I do not say it in these instances. Instead there is a short sharp "UH!", and they will just watch.
If they spot something they are allowed to chase, or that I wish them to chase (such as the lure, or the fox that was stalking the lambs one evening a few weeks ago), they are given the "release" word (I use the word "rabbit"), and will give chase.

This means I can also use the "release" word to get them mentally "revved up" before coursing, or if showing in a lacklustre manner, by asking "where's the rabbit"?
