TOPIC: Scottish Deerhounds in Western Canada

Scottish Deerhounds in Western Canada 2 years, 2 months ago #21454

Hello folks,

I was glad to happen upon your great site. I reside in Calgary, Alberta and have an extremely keen interest in you know who/what!

I was fortunate enough to be in the company of wonderful standard long haired dachshunds prior to hooking up with my first and only sighthound. She was a fawn beauty - mainly greyhound with a touch of ? that gave her an unorthodox coat, great length and really special character. We spent over a decade together. My family and I had to say goodbye to her last spring which saw me without a dog partner for the first time (no gaps!) in over 32 years. I would (and will) have another dachsie in a minute, but my wonderful, leggy gal left the strongest impression on me.

Sparing any further trivia - for years, I've been enamoured with the Sc. Deerhounds. A beautiful girl "Jewel" used to meet with my girl on occasion at an off leash area in Calgary. It seems that finding connections to these wonderful dogs in my area is challenging to say the least.

I'd love to hear from anyone out there that can suggest names or orgs. re. Sc. Deerhounds. I've researched the breed extensively, and have a firm understanding. I've an interest in lure coursing and have had the pleasure of meeting some of the Foothills Gazehound Club folks, as well as taking in an event last spring.

I'd love to hear from anyone who can advise in any respect. Breeders/enthusiasts in Canada or NW US, etc, etc..

Thanks in advance for your time!

Rick

Hi Rick in Calgary,
Nice to see you've found the "Community" here; a really great bunch of people & their hounds ++. My deerhound is Cailean turning 3 next weekend.
As you have sighthound experience and are interested in Lure Coursing I can't recommend highly enough Barbara Heidenreich and Richard Hawkins of Fernhill Deerhounds in Ontario www.fernhill.com/ They have a network of deerhounds and their willing slaves spanning the globe. The vetting process is important for you and the dog, so you must be prepared for any S.D. breeder to have a lot of questions. There are not many litters born in a year, so most breeders will refer you to another if you aren't stuck on waiting for one of their puppies.
I believe a puppy went to Calgary last year, Barb or Richard can tell you for certain. If you visit their website you will get an insight to them and their dogs. I also highly recommend the SDCA (Scottish Deerhound Club of America) www.deerhound.org/
There are occasions when adult dogs come up for rehoming & or mixed rescues from shelters.
If you are up for a little travelling there is a Specialty next weekend in Kentucky where some of the best breeders in North America will be. Info on the SDCA website.
I find little time to spend here, I'm afraid it is a little addictive, so I try to use restraint and visit once in a while.
Good luck in your quest
Regards
Barb

Hi Rick ,
this is Verena , from Vernon /BC , who can't imagine her life without deerhounds and rapidly went from 1 to currently 4- I also do lurecourse ad wish , there were more of us ( came to Calgary trials for a few years ) .My vey first deerhoud and super , super dog was Mahak ( aka Dianras Instant Magic , FCHX ) bred by Dorothy Carpenter and actually came from Calgary , or rather close by . Unfortunately Dorothy currently doesn't breed . But then there is also Lynne Bruce , kennel Hollyrood in the southern Okanagan , you can google her website ( long not updated though ) or get in contact with me to get her email address - I have 1 from Lynne , my great Mawu - Lynne has bred for well over 30 years and hails from Scotland , where she grew up going on hunts with lurchers and deerhounds...She is expecting a litter any day now . One of her boys from the last litter is Zippo in Edmonton , also on this website . I think , this it for Western Canada , do not forget the states though , there are a few more breeders - and perhaps someone in Manitoba , can't come up with her name at the moment( ah , brain came back - Patricia Wolfe ) ) and am not even sure wether she is from Manitoba or Ontario - in Ontario is not only Fernhill but also " Pennants " /Sheila Mathieson , a long time deerhounder and " Witsend " (who breeds very infrequently but with great success, darn , if I only culd come up with her name , sorry ! ). And , I think Susan Trow , originally from Quebec , now resides in Ontario , too ( Barb should know more ) . Do keep us updated on your progress please !

Hi Rick again
a little additional info as Verena mentioned Witsend which is Judith Bowman's kennel and Susan Trow who has moved back to Quebec. I am travelling with Susan next weekend to the Midwest Specialty; Judith and Sheila will both be there. There is also the Deerhound Specialty in Vermont in May where coursing will be part of the weeks events.
I should have mentioned the deerhound chat list which can be joined at the SDCA website. A young female deerhound cross has been rescued & will be looking for a permanent home, see the Deerhound-L for more info.

Well thank you all a bunch for your responses. I visited an obedience show in Calgary today, where I was able to speak with some of the great lure coursing folks I had the pleasure of meeting last spring. One of them made mention of the litter at Hollyrood, as well. The prospect of taking in a young adult is also VERY appealing to me. Does the opportunity arise often/rarely?

Thanks again for the feedback folks!

It happens not that very often , but regularly ; most often , I think , due to breeders keeping originally 2 pups to grow them out together and then decide whom to keep in the end .
It might make sense to to contact a breeder early , most seem to have waiting lists . Lynne/Hollyrood is a person , who knows a lot of sighthound people out here ;she has found new homes for more than one deerhound who needed it and is one of those , who get contacted in case there is need . If you are inteested in her contact , please let me know , she does not check her website/old email that frequently ....

Thanks Verena. Yes - I would indeed like to contact Lynne to introduce myself and see what's going on, so to speak!
