Have just taken the crew of 5 up onto our local golf course for their evening spin. It was really windy and rough and they loved it! Murray deerhound looked so majestic as he stood on top of a bunker with the wind blowing through his fur. They went crazy, running and playing chase - it was great to watch

I'm not long back from taking Clunie for a quick walk round our village backroad. Because it has been so wet as well as windy today we had a surprise. The road that leads upto the school had turned into a river with wee stones moving down it. Clunie thought this was wonderful and was desperate to follow where the water eventually ran off the road and into the flooded river. She was prancing about like a little pony in the water.
She also loves the wind and her ears trail out behind her and she loves wind scenting too.

ruff weather you say....this morning it was sooo windy in Edmonton I could hardly stand. It may snow here any time soon...fortunately..Zippo loves the wind and prefers cool weather to the heat we had this summer. Pls be patient with me on this...I just brought a computer home from the office and haven't completely cleaned it out...some issues arise. I tried to put a picture of our boy Zippo (Hollyrood Houndstoungue0 on yesterday...do not think it worked though. Glad to be here and hope to learn more..Zippo is our fist Deerhound - after over 24 yrs of Afghans and Borzoi - I had a terrible accident some years ago and a Deerhound is such low maintence compared to the previous dogs -(although - we don't refer to him as a 'dog') this is the first itme in my life I've got only one dog...so far. He is our love...Zippo is just over one yr old...such a wonderful boy. Nothing but joy and love - he takes good care of me. Lynn Bruce - his breeder has done a fab job -...congrats to Lynn - we love you!1

Clunie - is wind scenting when they hold their heads up into the wind cause Murray does this a lot. It is like he is smelling the air Why do they do that?

houndy..maybe he is smelling for rabbits. Our Zippo caught a rabbit in the school yard near our house in Oct last yr...it was about 3am..I couldn't sleep and was hurting...so took the boy for a short walk for distraction..he is sooo good so I let him off leash..within moments he caught a rabbit...there were 2, thank goodness he didn't run off to chase the other. I felt bad for the rabbit...but proud of Zippo...at such a young age too...he was only 5 months old then. I wondered if being city raised would hamper his skills - guess not - but now...he is always smelling in the wind...and wants to go back to the same place - we can't let that happen in broad daylight...what will the neighbors say?/ It was different on the farm...my dogs were awsome hunters.....Zippo is a social butterfly...he did make friends with a rabbit that came in our front yard all last winter...it was crazy...she stopped running when she realized he wasn't chasing her...she came back - night after night....and he waited by the front window...waiting...we laughed...she was from the 'wrong side of the field'..as it were. His girlfriend cannot be a rabbit...a few weeks later she brought 2 others to visit..possibly the parents - for approval?/ Which we had taken video...sooo crazy to see - never before have I seen a hound befriend a rabbit - Don says he was teasing her...creating a false sense of 'friendship' - then it would be easier to catch her...no way...he liked her. But the sniff continues....and continues..he knows every tree they sat under..??

Hi
Firstly my observation for today wet wet wet wet rain and wind, blowing rain up our valley in sheets - here comes the end of British summer time. So bad that Clunie refused to go out this morning, I took Fynn for a quick walk and we got soaked and he actually got spooked by the wind - first time he's pulled me home on the lead!
Houndy - wind scenting is aexactly as you described it. And from what little I know the purpose is literally to pick scents off the wind. I always think that they look so beautiful when they wind scent.

All dogs wind scent. Deerhounds look so beautiful when they do it, remember, their noses (and ears) are a million times sharper than humans, they pick up scents in the wind, it's a mind of information for them!
Infact, most animals do it, watch next time you see a bunny, it stops still, listens and twitches its nose to smell whose coming.
Thankfully Clunie, down here in Watford it has been windy, but no rain, so please keep the rain up your bit of the M1!
We only had a walk round the big park today, Saturdays is my day to clean, clean, wash, and iron, then have an evening out with hubby! A quick walk round the windy park turned eventful when Paddy the Border Terrier decided he didn't like this particular dog that kept following him and launched himself at it's throat! How embarrassing, he was picked up by his scruff and put back on the lead. Totally my fault, the terrier will have a go at other dogs when the Deerhound is out with us, don't know why, DH doesn't do it and certainly doesn't need protecting. A terrier with attitude!

Very interesting. Our terrier is exactly the same. Take him out on his own and he's very meek and avoids other dogs, well he will yak at them but only if they're on a lead or behind a fence, he would never attack them. Take him out with Ben the DH and he's a different dog and will attack any other dog, even a large German Shepherd although he's worse with small dogs.
He's got so bad that we can't take the pair of them out together unless it's guaranteed that there will be no other dogs around.

I know it's a DH website, but most of us have other breeds as well, so we may as well discuss this. Terriers are feisty and should be the first one you go for when trying to separate them fighting, luckily they are small enough to hoist up by the scruff of the neck, but if yours is anything to go by Robb, mine continues to fight in my arms! Perhaps it is a protective thing, he has the adorable little border head and looks like butter wouldnt melt in his mouth, he plays nicely with other dogs when it is just me and him, but when Murphy is around, he hates other dogs coming into his 'pack'. His brother comes round all the time, as my Mum owns him, he plays lovely with 'Charlie' until the DH is about, Charlie will jump up to say hello to the DH and our terrier launches himself at Charlie and pulls him away! He has also started weeing on my leg when there are other dogs around, I persume it is to let other dogs know, I'm his Mummy, either that or he hates the combat trousers I seem to have on every time he does it!
I never wanted another terrier, hubby did, give me a DH any day, you know where you are with them!

The terrier actually belongs to a friend who has been staying with us as a lodger for quite a while now. I would never choose to get a terrier as they (or this one) seem to be nothing but trouble. I know this is hard to believe but despite it's large size a deerhound is so much easier to live with than the terrier. The terrier also attacks the deerhound if he thinks that the DH is playing a bit rough with us or if he's on the sofa and the DH tries to get on as well. Luckily the DH has an easy going nature and will usually just go along with things to keep the peace although he will occasionally show the terrier his place if he really annoys him.
DH does play very rough with the terrier but has never hurt him except for once when the terrier stole a bone that he was really enjoying and on that occasion he picked the terrier up by the neck and shook him, he also tore the terrier's ear and the pair wouldn't socialise with each other for several days. They've spent a lot of time together now for nearly 4 years and overall thats not a bad record.

Back to Deerhounds and weather, My girls like to go in any. They don't care for the heat and from mid May thru October from about 8 or 9 in the morning it climbs from mid to high 70's f (20's c) to the high 80's and 90's (30's c). That means we're out about 6:30 for our hard, fast, long walks. Even then we're soaking wet. The "Fall" and "Winter" temps are a bit better generally in the 40's f to low 70's f. When it's cooler the girls are wild and crazy to go. Wind and rain (unless it's pouring) doesn't bother them. They are senting both the air and the ground. and at times it takes a hallf mile to get them to not want to pull, unfnortunately where we are, I have to keep them on a lead most of the time for their safety. But then they settle down and we have a good walk. Note, in the summer I keep them inside as it's too b.. hot for anything.
I had a Cairn years ago and he was just amazing. He wasn't yappy at all and size did not matter one bit to him. He wasn't overly agressive but he would not back down from anything. Next to my Deerhounds if I get another dog, it'll be a terrier. Probably another Cairn, but possibly a Border, or Irish one.

My dog Ben prefers the cooler weather, even if it's rough and windy. He hates the heat ofd the summer and I have to wait till late evening until he's willing to go out. He also hates heavy rain, once a storm broke while we were walking under trees in a wood. Lightning was striking very, very close and he didn't flinch. It was torrential rain and at first the tree canopy provided shelter but after 10mins or so the rain just came through the canopy. At that stage he gave me a look as if to say what the **** are we doing out in this and dragged me back to the car as quickly as he could.
I agree with you Terry about Terriers not backing down, our's won't back down to our Deerhound even when he's on his back with the DH towering over and growling at him. He's not a pure terrier but rather a cross between a border terrier and jack russel.

mmm....terriers - not my favorite breed I must admit.
Took the gang to Tenby this afternoon visulising a nice empty beach for them to have a good run on. Beach was packed!! Mind you, the tide was coming in so was not a lot of beach but I couldn't get over how many people were there for this time of year.
As usual Murray attracted loads of attention - one little boy asked me if he was a pony

Took Mac up top of the local hills today. The wind got under his tail, and he ran round like a mad thing. It was very busy up there and was lots of people and dogs taking in the views. He ran around and said hello to everyone with his tail flailing about and a mad look on his face. It was such a great sight to see, and thankfully no one took offense at the brief but enthusiastic greeting.
Hopefully we'll get some snow soon and we'll go back again.

Hi CiCoch
Looks lovely - but really busy - is it always as busy or is it due to midterm?
Where we are we think ourselves unlucky to meet more than one person on a walk - bliss!
We are meant to be getting snow either later tonight or tomorrow. It's probably cold enough, but so far only rain. I must admit that I like the snow and I wonder if Clunie will remember it when she does see it again!

This place is very popular with walkers as it's very close to the english border and is the highest and most prominent feature on the horizon that can be seen from most of Merseyside and Cheshire. Its a few miles from where we live, but it's high and got great views and it's great when it's cold and windy - blows the cobwebs away! On our normal walks we very rarely bump into anyone so it's nice for us to meet other walkers/dogs and be sociable.
No Snow yet, but here's some from last year ...

This is Ben's favourite weather, cool, bright and dry. We had a 7 mile jaunt around the lanes today.
