Ok so break it to me gently ..please! How secure will I have to make my garden for a deerhound? Will they dig under a fence?I thing I am most concerned about is at the side of the house is a fence with a large gate,it is about 4ft high.At the other side is a narrow gate which is about 5ft high. Also in the patio area there is a wall with decorative bricks on top which I think is about 5ft , but there is a much greater drop on the other side into my neighbours. He likes to store useful items there..!?like drain pipes and road signs etc.Just worried ..would or could a dog decide to jump the wall and end it very hurt landing in all that junk..sorry useful items Do you think I should build the wall up higher??And what about the gates? Thanks inadvance for any advice given

I think it would verry much depend on the dog tbh,
Layla wouldnt even think of jumping anything at all, it probably wouldnt even cross her mind,
but if she realy wanted to, then she probably could jump quite high.

there is another thread on hear, about jumping - will see if i can find it.

Dylan, it is what you want your dog to do. Murphy wouldn't jump over anything. We have a 3 foot decorative fence sectioning our garden off from the dogs garden, he has NEVER jumped it. We also have 2 baby gates in the house, again, he hasn't jumped either of those.
We did have a DH x once, whom we taught to jump, he used to clear 6 foot fences with ease, but would never have jumped out of the garden.
As for digging.......yes, they are mini JCB's when they get going, hence our little fence between the gardens, our lawns looked like he was digging down to Australia.

In short, if you teach him, he will jump.

Hi Dylan - Murray would not dream of jumping anything but Devil dog Carys has had a go. I have found that it is not the fences and gates that you have to beware of so much as any areas that they can wriggle through.

My son chopped about 6 conifers down last autumn and when they were there dogs didnt bother but now they have gone Carys has found that if she pushes through the brambles up on the back bank she can walk through and get out onto the top road! This only happened on Friday but I think she had been sussing it out for a while. She ended up being seized by the dog warden who then impounded her and I had to pay to get her out of the kennels and then buy a roll of stock fencing and posts to secure the area. So Carys has cost me 32.50 to get her out of the kennels (she had only been there for 20 minutes!) and 65 quid for the fencing and posts

Hi Everyone
Many thanks for your comments and Jane for the link all of which was of immense assistance.

I think the moral of the advice is don't train the DH to jump and then everyone will be happy.

I was naive about the theft of dogs and this has alerted me that possibility.

Thanks ever so much. D

Dylan, word of warning. You don't have to teach a deerhound to jump to give them the skills or the urge. My Mac does jump, when he was younger I never "taught" him or even encouraged him. Saying that , I have never discouraged him either, apart from where there was danger.

He will jump on command now which I consider a good thing, because I do lots of walking on public footpaths and although I can lift him over a fence if needed, I certainly wouldn't like to have to lift him over all the styles we have to cross on a normal walk.

Keep an eye on your dog, and consider that you may not be able to leave him unattended with 5ft fences.

Hi Dylan, my girls have shown that they can jump when out out and free running....like fallen trees, small rivers, over each other... etc. But my garden is completely fenced off and very secure, I would not settle if I thought they could get out or enyone could see in.
Best wishes Kerry

Depends on lots of things. The hairybeasty spends hours in the garden with a 3'fence and doesnt even think of jumping out...at night though and a 6' fence on the chase is no probs..
