I know of an elderly lady who is quite ill and is looking to rehome her 6 year old terrier - do they get on ok with deerhounds? I know a few of you on here have one so thoughts/advice please

Oh dear, I feel a terrier is going to be rehoused in the Houndy household!

As with any breed, it depends on the dogs themselves, yours are ok, they adjust nicely to new housemates. What is the terrier like with other dogs? Might be worth a walk together first, then let them sniff each other out and walk together, then perhaps a visit by the terrier.

My terrier and DH are best buddies and I know there are alot of people out there with both too. It all rests on how well socialised the terrier is with other dogs and that is not anything against terriers it is about all dogs.

I am only thinking of taking it in on a temp basis as the lady is quite ill and has no family. I dont want to think of her getting strssed over this. It is a female chi/jack russell x and gets on with kids, other dogs and cats.

Lurch, I think your right - the best thing is for me to take it and mine for a walk and see how things go. Murray would just ignore it but Carys would want to play with it all the time and would bat it with her paw to make it play (she does that with Sydney kitten)

When I was given Rocky for my birthday I was concerned about him as he was the size of Mack's paw. He even jumped in Macks mouth one time much to Macks disgust. But they love him and he gives as good as he gets. He is a great deerhound protection pup as he warns us if anyone is about so we worry less about dog thieves etc. This terrier will make it's feelings known.

Our DH and Terrier generally get on very well. The Terrier will sometimes attack Ben the DH but Ben just jumps on him and shouts at him, never had any physical damage caused to the Terrier although Ben did get a minor cut on his lips once or twice. Usually the disagreements are over the sofa or the Terrier getting jealous over something.

They play well together but I do sometimes worry that Ben is getting too rough, however it's usually the Terrier that provokes the heavy play by running at Ben and provoking him to give chase. Ben loves it when the Terrier jumps up at his face as he has become expert at head butting him away and never seems to tire of this game.

Hi Houndy. We have a rescue Lakeland terror. When we brought Freya home we let him watch her in the garden then a walk on leads just passing each other and then in the fields off lead(third day by now) we had to take time as Murphy was not well socialised with other dogs as a pup. He never starts anything but in true terrier style he wouldn't back off if attacked we think. They have been fine together ever since and although freya plays rough with him, he is generally tolerant of it all and just gives a good bark when he's had enough. I do think a gentle introduction is a good idea. Good luck!

Very kind of you to take the terrier into your home houndy. As you say, this lady is in poor health at the moment, and it will mean the world to her to know her pup is in good hands and has a loving holiday home. I'm sure your lot will make him very welcome.

I am a volunteer for the Cinnamon Trust that helps older people and their pets. If an elderly person becomes ill and there is no-one to take care of their pet a volunteer will help out. It is a very worthwhile charity

My deerhounds have always got on well with terriers and have quite a few in their doogy circle of friends so should be ok. The only dogs they aren't too keen on are labs and sspaniels for some reason

Millie has arrived at the Houndy household!

Sadly her owner has now passed away so it was a case of an urgent rehome. She is tiny - a cross yorkshire terrier/chi. 6 years old and totally spoilt

Murray treats her with contempt and Carys has been bouncing up and down like she is on springs Millie is more than capable of sorting the deeries out which is quite comical to watch. She has had a bath, scared Sydney kitten and is now sleeping on my lap.

I took them all out this evening and the 3 of them were as good as gold - hope it lasts

Will post some pics of her tomorrow

Hello,

Very great pictures from the Hound - Terrier teams.

Best regards

These two get on fine together, although spending hours digging the terrier out of holes is no fun at all. She was down a hole for 5hrs last week, had to dig down 8' to get her. They do work well as a pair as you can see from the way they keep the heat from the fire well away from any humans in the room.

Bring her to Rumbling Bridge tomorrow, Anne. I'm sure she'll give Old Jack a run for his money.
