I am paying £66 per month for the three deerhounds. This is only year by year cover. Is this about right?? Why don't pet insurance do no claims. I have only claimed once in all the years I have been insuring the dogs and it wasn't a massive claim.

That's pretty cheap - I'm forking out closer to £90 a month for my three. I have never understood why it costs way more to insure three healthy dogs than it does for full no claims bonus insurance for my car. I would have thought the risks of me totalling myself and the car were considerably higher and likely to cost my insurers far more. I guess they play on our fear of losing our beloved dogs and crank up their prices accordingly. I still wouldn't be without insurance, though.

I think we're ripped off by pet insurance as we are by motor insurance.Having said that,we couldn't cope with large vet bills so it's the lesser of two evils.Ours are all covered under lifetime policies,so i don't know whether what you are paying is good or bad.For our Spinone and older Deerhound we are paying just under £38 a month each.Having said that we have recently insured new Deerhound puppy Skye and it's £50 per month.I would guess the cost will go up for the other two new renewal is due, leaving us paying £150 a month for the three .

That is horrendous!!
£38 per month per dog at the cheapest??
Surely you would be better paying into a seperate account just for vet bills, and then if you dont need to claim for a year or so the money is still yours?
Manipulation of good and caring people is the insurance mans game.I'm disgusted

hairy beasty,i'm beginning to think you're on to something with the seperate bank account idea.I know i'm getting older(and therefore time seems to go more quickly)but it's not that long ago when i was insuring dogs with similar cover for £15 each.I have also only claimed twice in over twenty years-it makes you wonder why the high price inreases every year.

God Chon who are you with?

If you want to go the bank account route, then your better off with an
instant access ISA account, you can still have a card for it, but its higher intrest,

Some insurances now do an emergency cover, its only a yearly thing
but there covered for accadents and you can claim stright away for them,
but if there ill, then you have to wait 10 days before claiming.

With Layla i think i was paying around 38 quid on that KC insurance,
i spoke to the insurance people, and they did have other covers - a lot cheaper than i was paying, they do the emergency cover aswell, i think it was just over 16 quid a month i was paying for that.

We are paying £40 a month for our Boris..plus £70 excess. We did make a £1400 claim when he was 4 months and so we still have some way to 'pay back' as it were.
It really is a postcode lottery especially if you live within the M25!
For all my dogs I ensured that their cover was lifelong and not annual as if there is anything 'ongoing' I want to know it is covered. Even a £4000 limit can go quite quickly with an accident trauma.
If your insurance is annual, not only is a condition excluded on renewal but also if you want to change insurer.
Theoretically you could put money aside but how long and how much would you need for a broken leg? Fine if you can afford to pay in the meantime whilst you build up your bank but we cannot afford to do that.

Chook, the insurance policies are with Petplan-and they tell me i'm getting a group discount for insuring three.

hairybeasty-never thought about the Carribean holidays-you would think they would at least have the decency to send me a postcard.

Lets hear from a few more people-what are you paying/for what cover/who with.

Maybe we can start a revolution

I think we should push for at least "No claims" reducing the cost for people who rarely claim. I have an excess of £60 and my vet seems to charge £68 for each thing he does so I never bother claiming.

I have emailed Tesco's which is my insurance. Anyone fancy emailing their insurance company?

hi i have skye insured with petplan,£38 per month(includes death cover)on 12 month plan, the reason i stay with them is there is never any quibble over claims, they are fast at paying up and they are the only company the vets will do a direct claim with which is handy if you are skint and cant pay up front!!!

Re:Insurance question 2 years, 1 month ago #22912

Hello,

For what risks is this insurance?

Best regards

Hi Joerg

Insurance covers a number of things. Mainly if your dog gets ill or has an accident the insurance will pay for treatment.

Also if your dog caused an accident they could pay out the other person.

Hello MrsMc,

Many thanks for your answer and informations.

That's a good idea in theory, but if (as happened to us), you get a vet bill for more than £5,000 within a month of collecting your 12 week old puppy, you'd be ever so slightly stuffed.

He was quite poorly!

Got to go out in a minute, but the condensed version is that he ate something like the string you get in a joint of meat before we collected him. That got stuck in his gut and over a week or so sawed through his intestines, causing peritonitis. Major op to clean that out. A few days later the damage to the gut caused an intussusception (where the gut telescopes over itself). Gut dies very quickly and another major op to remove almost 2 feet of intestine. About 10 days later, when he was home from the very expensive vet hospital, his stomach started to blow up again. Another midnight dash to the hospital to have his stomach pumped because everything had stopped working and the food in there was rotting.

Then he got better and won best lure coursing deerhound 2009

I dont have insurance on my cat - he's a house cat,
so never thought there was any point, but when he became ill,
and ended up costing just under 5 grand (yep i spent 5 grand on a moggy lol)
i did find the money and got him sorted, when it comes down to it,
theres always away to sort it.
