Tonight, taking dogs for a walk Murray D/H decided to play rougher than usual (usual is rough!)and he managed somehow to break my beddie lurcher's leg! I think that Murray bodyslammed Freddie whilst playing resulting in a hell of a noise from Freddie and a trip to the dark side (vets). I now have a dog in a POP,on painkillers and a large vets bill!

Don't you just love 'em

Poor Freddie, hope he isn't in too much pain. Unfortunately, Deerhounds are a bit too big and rough for the smaller dog. Murphy used to tread on our Border Terrier, but I got him out of it, every now and then he does 'fly by' but Paddy hears him coming and crouches down.

Yes, he needs an ASBO!

Freddie is on painkillers but he has been as good as gold. Murray is very sheepish - he knows that something is wrong with Freddie as they are the best of friends but he can't work out that it was his fault!

I always take a pet corrector with me when out on walks and use if if Murray gets too rough with my other dogs. It works well as Murray really hates it and now I only have to take it out of my pocket and he immediately stops hassling them. Unfortunatly, I had left it at home tonight - typical!

Freddie is having dreams as he is whimpering in his sleep. More likely a nightmare dreaming of a lump of a dog bodyslamming him into a wall

Poor Freddie, poor Murray too, its not his fault he is a clumsy great giant!

What is a pet correcter? My Mum has 2 Border Terriers, dog and bitch and they keep running away and I mean they are gone, she isn't enjoying her walks now and she is 63 and has arthritis and has to spend an hour looking for them, would a pet correcter work on them?

The pet corrector is a can of pressurised air - you use it to interupt unwanted behaviour such as barking, aggression or deerhound hassling

It does not hurt them in any way as it only emits a sharp, loud hissing noise when you aim it at them. It is very effective. I always take a can with me as it works to break up dog fights. I have a bit more peace of mind that if my dog come under attack (or, God forbid, launch their own attack) then i have the pet coorector to break it up.

If ASBO hound starts to rough the others up I only have to show him the can and he stops straight away.

You can get it from Pets at Home and most good pet shops and it costs about 5.99. It is in slim, red can and you also buy a holster for it so you can wear it on your waistband - I am not that cool - I keep the can in my pocket

I don't think it will help your mum though

I've just read up on it on the internet, no it wouldnt help her once they are off, but perhaps whilst they are nearby she could use it to remind them to stay close, either that or get an air horn! Naughty little dogs, but she isn't very strong with them and I told her today they are taking advantage of her they don't respect her. Mine I only have to use a certain tone and they have that timid look. I don't want them to be scared of me, but I want them to know, I am the boss and I mean it!
That doesn't work when something gets up, once the DH is off, he is off and no amount of calling will get him back until he has either caught it, caught up with it or lost sight of it!!! But the Terrier knows his place, I usually say "You dare" and he listens.........when he wants to

Poor Freddie, I hope his leg heals quickly. These boys can be so rough. Lockie body slams Xena and bites her legs and jumps on her head. Xena rarely goes outside now if he is out there lurking. He can be such a brute.

Hope Freddie's leg mend quickly. I know Deerhounds can be very, very rough. I've had Ben slam into me at high speed when he was younger and I think he nearly broke my leg once. Luckily he seemed to get the message that I was not amused and he's refained from doing it since.

I'm surprised that he's not hurt the terrier the way he dive bombs him at great speed but he is tough as old boots and seems to just roll out of the way in the nick of time.

The pet corrector sounds a good idea.

Wow Brollachan that sounds just like what Taog does to Aila... Maybe they're related
That said, when Taog was younger Aila body slammed him into a tree and broke one of his ribs. terrible owners that we are we didn't realise until several months later when a boney lump formed over the site as it healed. In our defence, he did only go slightly lame (never on the same leg) and never stopped eating or doing zoomies!!

I hope Freddie is feeling better soon, sending him lots of healing vibes from across the sea!!

I'd like a Whippet puppy as I've always loved them and there is a bonus that my daughter could show it (so she doesn't get bored when we are showing our deerhounds), but I would be worried about my "two big clod hoppers" flattening it.

Any tips for introducing a smaller breed puppy into a deerhound home?

When Murphy was 18 months old, I bought my hubby a Border Terrier puppy, he has done fly by's and trod on him, but in general he is very gentle with him, he does pick him up by his head and swing him around, but it is all soft mouthed, I've not really had any issues with him hurting him, hes hurt me more!
In a Whippets defence, the DH probably won't catch him anyhow! and stopping too much boisterous behaviour right from the beginning is good, but also caution re letting them all run together. They will adapt to the smaller dog, I can guarantee Murray didn't mean to do it, he's play mate is now out of action so he wouldn't want to hurt him! Get the puppy, but just air caution. I always told Murphy off when he started getting a bit rough and he learnt quickly, the Border also crouches down when Murphy is zooming on by!

Murray is very sheepish at the moment. As I can't take Freddie out on walks Murray has been very quiet with the other dogs. For a start he can't catch Smokey greyhound and he has learnt from previous nips not to bother the other 2 lurchers.

Having said that we have just come back from a lovely windy wald on the local golfcourse (no-one about - they must all be watching Wales v RSA. COME ON WALES ) when Murray did one of his flypast's and nearly knocked me down! He doesn't mean to do it - he just gets over excited. I do love him very much
