Hi everyone,

I'm at a dog science conference at the moment and I was talking to a professor yesterday that specialises in dog nutrition and dental care. We got talking about picky eaters and I mentioned how deerhounds can be very picky. She was very interested as she had worked a lot with greyhounds and found that they had lots of placque problems despite no structural issues with their teeth which is unusual.

Anyway she mentioned that she thinks they may produce less saliva and apparently less saliva = less taste perception which might explain the low interest in food. So the question is, for those of you with picky eaters: do you notice that your dog has a drier mouth than other dogs that eat well?

It's just a theory at the moment but I thought I'd try and get a general idea of if the theory holds true.

Cheers

My fussy eaters are both very NON dribbly and have clean dry mouths. The older one does have minging teeth as well. So maybe there's something in it.

Hi Han

Glad the conference is proving interesting. Having travelled halfway round the world to get there though maybe you should pack the computer away and go and look round Vienna

In the meantime I'll try to compare the saliva outputs of your two deerhounds!

How interesting, my greyhound, who ate for England had terrible breath and her teeth were not good by the time she died at 12 yrs. Deerhound is not picky, he has a dry mouth, but always a runny nose? anyone know what that means? it drips usually while we are eating and he is watching? and yes, eh does get told to go away, or lie down, he is just stubborn.

Layla gets the runny nose thing, im costantly haveing to wipe it for her
as it drips everywere, with her it happens at any time,
she does get a dry mouth, but isnt realy a fussy eater - teeth are good.
