I was watching a dog programme which advised agaist putting your dogs name on its tag/disc saying that this made it easier for the dog to be stolen and that you should only put your tel number. We have always put name and number on all our dogs and was wandering what others thoughts are on this subject??

As the law stands all dogs must have an identity tag with the owners name and address on and this is what mine have no mention of the dogs names

On mine i only have - door number, postcode
home number, mobile and vets number,

Thats all ive ever had put on them, no names nothing like that.

P.S on a tag you dont have to put your full adress down, same as your name
you can just put your last name.

Good one Hairybeasty!!!

I am going to hack everyone off now! What identity tag? Mine don't have them, they are microchipped, I wouldn't let Murphy off running with a collar on anyhow.

Laylas micro chipped and tattooed, shes tattooed because chips arnt a proof of ownership
apperantly you only own the chip, even though its in the dog.

But chips only work if either dog wardens or pounds scan, which there are lots that still dont scan, lots cant be arsed - as batterys have gone and they cant be bothered to change them,
the amount of dogs that have come in to rescue, that are chipped is unbelivable
but the pounds missed the chipps, one dog was chipped twice, because the first one
was faulty and wasnt picked up, neither by the pound or the rescue that chipped it a second time, it was only picked up when it was rescanned, to check the chip was working.

I don't get why it's a problem to put the dog's name on the tag? These are deerhounds after all...think about it, they don't come when we call them, they'd hardly bother with a stranger shrieking their name! As usual you've summed the matter up succinctly HB. Good one.

very true when skye got herself lost in forest and made her way back to my van(very clever )she apparently was circling the van but would not go to anyone or let anyone near her

When my Greyhound went missing in a storm and the dog warden picked her up, she was ear tattoo'd because we raced her. She was registered to us, but they didn't bother checking with the NRGC who would have given them our name and address, they then told me that she had gone to Battersea - a trip to Battersea on a Friday afternoon = 5 hours = not there, turns out she was 2 roads away in local boarding kennels. I do wish they employed people with a little bit of dog breed knowledge.

If you haven't ever been to Battersea it is a must! Luckily I kept a level head on me and walked out minus a new addition.

At present I am fairly sure a dog only requires a tag in a public place..and as mine only work on private land..they have no tags...
I do agree though that in case of an accident..owners phone number and vets number should be on the tag...
Wont stop them being stolen though....
Have a look in "The Countryman's Weekly" newspaper..there are stolen dogs in there by the score...all breeds..tagged and chipped...stolen from cars and gardens the length and breadth of the UK...ads offering cash rewards for safe return.. week after week...collars and chips mean nowt to a dog thief...
