Some of you have advised having a crete as somewhere safe to put a pup for a sleep or some time out,it is not normally something I would consider but with 2 other dogs in the house I want to know that the little guy can go somewhere have a sleep and not be disturbed. It had been suggested to me that they were easy to pick up second hand and therefore you could just get a bigger one when needed. This is not the case where we live so I need to buy a new one but what size to you all use???

Would depend on what size you could accomodate, mines a 48".
For a deerhound pup i probably wouldnt use anything less than that, as they grow rapidly
there are bigger ones than that, but theres only certain places that sells them,
Layla can still fit in our crate, but she cant lie down properly in it,
so a 48" would only last a few months.

Have you tried ebay, its were i got mine from, got it for about 15 quid
think at the time paid about 8 quid dilivery.

Our adult bitches can fit into a 48" and we have used one for Bree when she was season. Lockie however, our monster boy won't fit into any crate. Infact we can't fly him interstate cause he is too big for the plane
Bo our 7 month old sleeps in a 48" crate and there is plenty of room for growth.

We used a 48" for Freya too. Actually she liked the smaller one we had for the terrier for the first few weeks - then she grew! We only had closed for night time as she chewed a wee bit too much and as her quiet place - door open so she could choose. It's not up now but we have what is called a Pethome which sits in the conservatory and she chooses to go in there very often. Only use a crate as a door block to separate them when she was in season. She loves having a wee house of her own but the crate was too big really for the living room. If you live near Northants you are very welcome to borrow ours till she no longer needs it. Just one point - It is too big to put up in a normal car/estate, don't know about the people carrier types. I bought a huge one from a company on the net in Chorley. Its about 5 feet by 6 feet - perfect for a growing deerhound. I think it'll also be useful when/if we ever have puppies. It was expensive but not as expensive as a a)new kitchen table b) new kitchen floor c) new dog!

I personally do not use crates for dogs of this seize - I did use xpenns to keep puppies in overnight and know of others , who also do this when at work with their young hounds- gives the room to stretch their legs , play walk a bit .

You would perhaps have to google " exercise pens " -they are a bit like baby stalls for dogs , come in various seizes ( and heights ! ) and dog and whatever else s/he needs can go in with them - they have room to wander a bit , sit , stretch , even play a little - some dogs need the top covered as to not climb out . Those pens are widely used here - they are foldable and made out of metal - I e.g. attach 1 or 2 to my car when I go lurecoursing , so the dogs can choose wether to lie in the car or on the grass ; for my last 2 puppies I closed my kitchen off with those expens overnight , so they were confined to a place ( a babygate would do the same ) . A very practical invention !

thank you that is all great advice which I think I will go for I have been wandering around the house and I think a baby gate (if I cannot see the pens you speak of)would be good.I could then put him in the little room off the kitchen and bring the other dogs in and out of the house by the sliding door.Yes I think thats better idea ..I am afraid my wife would freak if she saw this big crete coming in to her house.

Re:Advice on dog cretes please 1 year, 5 months ago #27681

We also use baby gates to keep dogs seperated or areas clear. When buying them try and get the ones with the narrowest bar space. Sometimes the pups can get their heads stuck particularly with the wooden ones. We bought ours on Ebay and got the tallest and narrowest bar space width. They work really well. We have an xpen in the lounge and the crate is in the bedroom

I think Verenav means something like this.

www.kmsdirect.co.uk/shop/...748db852e72bd51

Most places sell them - there is another type of puppy pen,
but cant remember who makes them, there more solid in construction,
grazeland on hear used one when she had her litter few years ago.

I use a giant crate for new puppies (don't know size but will still comfotably house my large adult bitch)and I also have a giant soft crate which is invaluable when travelling although they do need to be crate trained first to avoid scratching the front off. The wire crate made a perfect whelping kennel for our parson terrier last year with a box at one end and the rest as a run!!
