Still so pissed off to Pyry.
Lost him for 1,5 hours after he just took off in the middle of our night walk last night!

We were walking in well-known places and one second he was there and the next not.
He has come back before, after a while. Like 10-15min but not this time. There was blind dark out there exept my flashlight. Two of three hounds stick with me and Pyry didn't.
I was so sure that some maniac had ate him for late night snack.

I whistled called him by the name and nothing.
First I walked around with the other two to find him. Nothing.
Then I went back home wishing to find him there too. Nothing. I got back out with one hound and went to search for him all over. The roads in case of smassing with a car. And if there were other people who might have seen him. Nothing.
Back in to woods where he left. Nothing.
I was aready to kill him by myself. Go missing three days before birhtday. GRR!

Was about to go back home and declare him missing, make calls and put messages all over.
Walked accross our parking lot and saw some dark shape there. And there he was, the #%¤!!&¤# Deerhound. The second I asked him "Well who we got here", he jumped to me and was like "Hey mom, what are you doing here I'm so excited, YAPPEE!"

And not a scratch on him.

I have used to find the hound where it took off. Not to find him back home.

In case of next time, which will come sooner or later by the way, what to do when Deerhound runs away??
Obviously I don't have a clue how Deerhounds work on solo trpis.

I am sure glad he is home , safe and sound !
Mine have never been away for that long , with 1 exception , when my first deerhound , terrified of shots/bangs and out in the yard unbeknownst to me ( dog door ) ,jumped the fence and took off into the night when my neighbours started fireworks. I must have heard her touching the gate when running off and was out right away , calling/yelling/whistling - then locking the rest of them in and taking the car , driving everywhere , 2 hours later I decided to drive way up into the bush , and , about 3,5 hours later there she came into my headlights, somewhere in the bush , dancing and sooo happy , that I found her/she found me , unharmed and exhausted . Now I always lock them in when I assume that there might be a little firework - mostly holiday weekends ; luckily I only have neighbours for about 2 mths out of the year , living in a summer cottage colony .
Usually mine are gone for 3-10 minutes during our walks , and then they either hunt or chew on some bones or whatever they find out there - when they are gone for longer than that I start being nervous...- sometimes they run pretty far , up or down a mountain side after deer/coyote or so and then just more or less walk back - and , more often than not , they reappear from a totally different direction , even after only a few minutes .
Never had a boy dog - perhaps , if unneutered , he was out for a litte love ????

Ben's only ever run off chasing squirrels, rabbits, etc. He's always returned within 5 minutes. In fact he always seems to be very, very careful to not get lost and doesn't go far. I did lose hime once over Cannock Chase for approx 15 mins but then found him waiting by the car.

Could be he's gone off hunting up and got stuck or got on to a scent/ sight
of something lost track and couldnt find his way back,

It may be a one off - but if he did it again, i would probably think of going back to basic's
with his off lead training, i would also probably carry some rehydrate with me,
as a just incase, have seen some dogs take off after something and come back virtualy on
their knees.

One bloke i know, attached a GPS to his dogs collar, so he could find out what his dog had been
up to whilst out on a walk, there verry handy as it shows you via google earth
where they have been, it dosent show you in virtual time though, as you have to
plug it in to the computer to download all the data - once home,
but they are good for dogs who continualy go off hunting up.

Over here in New Zealand a lot of dogs just disappear for a week to 10 days into the bush the first week in December. My friend had it happen 2 years in a row to her vizlas, and it took us a while to work out that it was the smell of deers' placentas when the doe's calve that was luring them away. Could it be something like that ie I presume the "roar" must be on in Europe just now- when the stags roar for does'??
Anyway, this is absolutely no help at all about what to do when they do go off. Sorry.

One of my old border collies used to disappear for hours at a time, when he was meant to be helping me - he's be drinking calfs milk in the calf shed or looking for bitches - he was a terrible womaniser. One time, he went off and didn't come back tillon dusk and I was so pissed off I shut him in the back of the ute, drove home and let him out into his kennel. Next morning when I went to load the dogs up to go to work again there was a whole cold roast chicken in the back of the ute. Who knows where he got it from? This was soemwhere near Ayr in Scotland. Imagine going to get your dinner and it had gone!

Thank you Joerg , at times way too much nature - bears even in my tiny little yard , at least intially , always later in the year , october , when the appletrees that still gor herevin the bush , from former orchards , are ripe - also , when I had year round neighbours( most only spend summers here ) who left - stupidly ! - their garbage can outside all week , which of course will bring an extra hungry bear - in preparation for hibernation that is ! - to empty it , if necessary every night ....Now , that the nighbours are gone and the bears have learned , that there ar4 huge beasties who can pile out of the dogdoor at any given time and bark at them ( ok , only 3 do it , one rather covers her ears with all that noise ! ) , they basically only wander by , usually at the exact same time of the night - am curious , when the first ill appear this year .
Still meeting them on my hikes up the hill/in the bush , no one been down yet- doesn't really matter though , where you meet them , I basically prefer them wandering by my house to meeting them on my walks .

To me he has gone off hunting(what he was bred for)so at times all the shouting/calling wont make any difference. The one good thing is he tracked back to the car but i hope he had no roads to cross?. ATB TREVOR.
