Wow! I'm amazed at that. I've only been back in England for a couple of years, after having spent more than 10 years living in Scotland. Dogs were part of everyday life - mine came to work with me and Fergus often lay beneath a meeting table! Obviously, I couldn't take them into the city but they were just accepted everywhere else I went. Ive found it much less tolerant down here, apart from the Lakes!

Hi we live up here in the Highlands of Scotland (Caithness) and we never have any problems with our two deerhounds everyone is very accommodating towards them and will help in any way they can,it may be just local knowledge but we have loads of places to let them run free.

What a beautiful photograph! You clearly have an eye for a good picture. Where was it taken?

Sorry to hear you found things tricky with the dogs, like Farnorth said - maybe it's a local knowledge thing? If you ever head to Aberdeenshire, drop me a line and I'll let you know a few places to go.

Hi the photos are brilliant we are about 180 miles farther north about three hours drive time so cant help with local knowledge in that area.

I'm just back from Loch Alsh area too! Here's a photo of one of the local hazards!
We were beside Loch Hourn and managed to find a couple of lonely beaches where Dirk and our lurcher Biddy could run about, but generally in the mountains we had to keep them on leads because of sheep and deer. Most people thought Dirk was a wolfhound but delighted to hear he was a deerhound. The place was so remote we didnt get to go to any cafe's or bars so I dont know if they would have been allowed in!

Lovely photos. Really beautiful.

I live in Argyll, west coast, there are lots of places here to let hounds run free. Sorry you had a problem. Beaches or Forestry Commission tracks are usually good for lead free walks wherever you are in Scotland.

best of luck next visit.

Wendy

It does help to know the area. My good friends live in Grantown on Spey and Alan trains gundogs. They also have some difficulty nowadays as so many of the old estates has been bought up by non locals, so they actually have to rent land for training. Very different to my memories of the area. However I have just come back from Ayrshire and Argyll where there were lots of dogs on forest trails, hill walking and beaches. Hope all the beautiful scenery made up for it!

A couple more:
At the sea-side, can't remember where but we drove all around the Firth of Forth stopping at all the little towns and letting the hounds run around, they loved it.
