Hi. Just hoping someone out there has experience of the urinary diet regime. Murphy has been put on the Royal Canin urinary diet, tinned version. He hasn't lost weight but is permanently hungry and trying to beg/scrounge food now. We have been told very firmly that he may have no treats/rewards of any kind and this regime is forever-no variation. He had 22 bladder stones(the oxalate variety) and this regime is to try to prevent recurrence, which of course we too want to support. Not a guarantee as the vet feels he has a genetic predisposition to forming theses stones. Any ideas on a reward that would not upset the diet. I looked on the net and they suggest chicken/turkey and a few things like rice and melon, but our vet is adamant there should only be the tin of Royal Canin. Glad to have ideas.

Poor boy - no experience with this kind of diets here , but , lots of experiences with different vets . any chance you could also consult a vet more versed in so called " alternative medicines " ? "regular " vets tend to be educated about feeding by the big commercial dogfood companies - lots of vets even seel their foods here and make ood money of it - so , your vet might just not know any better . Those commercial giants like to use scare tactics .
Btw , I have at least 3 different vets I might go to for different problems ....- all think similar ( more or less " putside of the box " ) but have different specialties . A longtime firend of mine and reired vet really , really encouraged me to do so , to get 2nd opinons for more difficult problems and to not let myself be talked into things , if there might e a better/different solution out there.

I got my cat off the perscription diets as soon as i could, like you i found he was starving all the time, i did question my vet about it, and was just told to feed him as much as he wanted, the script diets arnt made for long term use and are not balanced properly - hes now on normal wet cat food (has been for 4 years) and does verry well on it,
he suffered badley from struvite.
If you think about in humans - they arnt put on specal diets, they do have to cut certain foods out, so i cant see it being any different in dogs - would it be worth finding a canine nutritionist.

If youve got the time, then home made is probably the best diet you could give.

And this stuff ive been told is good and does help prevent them forming.

One thing its worth getting in some testing strips, that way if you do make a
home made diet, you can keep an eye on the ph of his urine and can adjust accordingly.

i found this topic on another forum, could help.

Thank you for your support and advice. Am loking at the home made option for when we wean him off the Royal Canin - forever is too long for the poor chap to have no variation at all! The struvite can potentially be dissolved but not the oxalate and even on the special diet he has a 50% chance of getting them again at some point. Will let you know how we get on. Have also contacted a cousin who is a vet in Ireland. Thanks again.

Tbh the more you do look in to it - the more confliting it gets,
i only researched mainley for struvite's, and it was so confusing,
so many people have different idea's of what cause's them
how to treat them and what food should be fed.

I was lucky with my vets though in that she gave me advice on what she thought
but thats all's it was advice, what i did with it was my choice
we battled for about 2 months all together, as even though struvites
can be disolved, he was producing them faster than they would disolve
there was that many, even i could see them when he did wee,
that was even on the script food.
