I was about to take Ben for a walk in a valley next to my house at 8AM this morning when I saw riders with a lot of dogs approaching in the distance. Luckily I waited as they got nearer the dogs were making a tremendous racket and looked very frenzied.

It turned out to be a fox hunt and presumably they were hunting at that strange time to avoid detection. I was alarmed by the frenzy of the dogs so abandoned our walk. Does anyone know whether a pack of Fox Hounds in that state would have been a danger to my dog? I've heard that they will kill cats and small dogs.

Hello Rob,

I have found this in wikipedia over the Foxhounds:

Quote:

"Temperament

The English Foxhound was originally a pack hound, therefore, it gets along well with other dogs and enjoys human companionship. It gets along with horses, children, and other pets, as it is a gentle, social, and tolerant breed." END

At this time of year, they'll be cubbing - it's a dispersal exercise, rather than actual hunting. Foxhounds shouldn't pose a threat to a Deerhound, but it's probably best not to take the risk.

Its probably best not to take the chance with frenzied dogs no matter what the breed

Re:Fox Hunts 1 year, 7 months ago #28593

Foxhounds are wierd characters are'nt they - bumped into a huge pack at a country show who were impeccably behaved and one sniffed Dirk and ran off wagging his tail. But a few years ago a hunt went across our land by accident, totally freaked out my horses and sheep and I just managed to get the dogs inside before they saw us. It was a really frightening moment - so I think you did the right thing to leg it!

Foxhounds are great friendly lumps...terriers that stink of fox can work with them and nothing untoward happens...kids can play with them at shows...they only scare those people and animals who are not used to them...but I agree..15 couple of them in full cry can look very scary..

It was more like 30/40 dogs. I know someone with fox hound pups and they're great. I'm not sure I'd trust a frenzied pack of them though.

sorry Robb... Hounds are counted in pairs..or "couples" because of the way they are brought to your house if you agree to take them on at 8 weeks...to be taught the ways of people...and how to behave in the house and around children/livestock...so 30 hounds are called 15 couple,etc..
My mum always had them every year for about 20 years...as a child I used to curl up with them in a basket in front of the fire....

Would 3 or 4 Deerhound chasing a deer pose a threat to another dog/child? Surely if they are dangerous and posed a threat to humans/other animals, they wouldn't be out with them. These dogs are highly trained, a rogue in the pack serves no purpose. They hunt by smell and the smell of a fox is unmistakable.

Deerhounds are sight hounds and hunt by sight as we all know and focus totally on what they chase as anyone who has been bowled over by them during chase will testify and i am sure that a pack of foxhounds have the same intensity when following the scent.During the summer when at a game fair we spoke to members of a fox hunt and there dogs were milling about amongst hundreds of people and other dogs ,when i asked about training i was told that any that were(rogue)were weeded out at an early age and not kept surely this is the sign of responsable dog owners to not allow this type of behaviour to get into there pack and as such spread through the breed.

I fear for HB junior, the lining they put in lums these days are very narrow
I would like to offer a cockerel that could be dropped down the blocked lums and so save the young lad a life of grime (even if it is a family tradition)

Worth watching out for people trying to disrupt hunts, their tactics can often be much more dangerous to you and your dogs than the hunt hounds. Some of these folk would see any hound and assume it was involved with the hunt and as such may feel the need to 'save' it or chase/take it away.

Couldnt possibly accept Anne...but thanks for the offer..I have heard about your savage cockerel before..maybe it would be better to insert a stick and use it as a floor mop?
Anyway..chimneys are what little boys were made for...
