TOPIC: Seizures in Dogs

Seizures in Dogs 3 years, 11 months ago #392

One of our Lurchers had a seizure the other day. It was quite violent, typically how I would imagine an epileptic seizure to be. Foaming at the mouth, violent jerky movements, followed by unconsciousness and on waking, total confusion. She has since had another, very similar. The vet has found nothing in blood samples - I think this rules out kidney/liver problems and poisoning. She is 13 and never been affected before, otherwise she is fit and well. Has anyone had any experience of this? The vet seemed to think it is unlikely to be epilepsy, due to her age.

Hi Rob. This is probably a bit OT but our 16 year old cat has just started to have seizures. They are just the same as you have described for your dog. From talking to people with experience with old animals they feel that it may be tumour related but I haven't had this diagnosed. He is well in every other way. Now that you have made me think of this, it has been nearly a month since his last seizure which has been the longest time so far (that we have witnessed) between them.
Old age is a bugger!

Yeah it is isn't it. Its just...rubbish... when they get old. I think the vet did mention possible tumour, but I think she was trying to be gentle and played it down, I'd much prefer to get the facts. Hope the cats ok. It must know a trick or two living with those dogs!

He sure does. Oscar has had a couple of close calls being caught outside. But even after all the grief the dogs give him, he still rubs their legs and lets Lockie lick him. He is a most forgiving cat.
Actually it can be quite funny when Oscar leaves the room to go out and the dogs decide to give chase. You can hear the dogs barreling outside and 30 seconds later Oscar walks back into the room. I don't know how he avoids them sometimes.
