I was wondering what forum members do for a living and how they combine it with looking after their D/H's?

We are both teachers. Our older girls let the dogs out when they get home at about 3.15 and we also pay someone to walk them once a day and to pop and let them out for a wee etc also. It isn't ideal but they are never on their own for longer than 2-3 hours.
Obviously in the holidays there is no problem. I would love to so something based from home that would allow me to be with them all the time.

I am a project estimator for a landscape & wetland restoration company. I have the great good fortune to take my DH to work with me. My boss has 2 mini dachshunds Cailean adores, but the big lug has to be careful around the wee things.

I am working night at a hospital and My housband working daytime. Normally my dogs are sleeping with me after we have been walking in the morning. In summertime I have them in a dog-yard (my schipperkes) I don't think that Norbert (DH) wants to be there but we'll see.
In nowadays I can not sleep much because of Norbert we sleeps at about two ours and then he is awake for one - one and a half, and then we going to sleep again and that's my days. Lucky me to have some days free I work two or three nights and then I am free for two or three. And once in a period of 6 weeks I am working four nights and then I'm free in seven nights.

I work in the local hospital as a receptionist in the Radiology Department. I work 9am
to 3pm but the hounds are not left alone for long because Alan is a farmer so he is
back at the house on a regular basis to take the dogs out for a run in the field at the
back of the house. Since I have been off work after my op I realise exactly how often
he comes back to the house, what a life! The man protests too much I think!

I teach children with severe emotional & behavioural problems. During term time I am up at 5am to give the girls a good run before work. Elsie Grey just hates early mornings and would sleep untill at least 10 if I let her! I almost have to tip her off my bed in the mornings Daisy May is good and gets up with me. I have fantastic neighbours who have a key and come in at lunch times for them.We have another trot when I get in from work. Here is a pic of Elsie Grey clutching the pillow and refusing to get up in the summer.

I am a nurse and am a manager of a 60 bedded care home for older people who have severe dementia.
I work from 8am - 4pm mon-fri and I take the hounds out before going to work for about 30 mins. My son pops in twice during the day then I take them out as soon as I get home from work and then again in the evening (before Eastenders!).
I used to put in a lot of extra hours but since having Murray I am very strict with my hours and make every effort to leave the home at 4pm (earlier if I can swing it)as I just want to be with them.
I too, would love a job working from home so I could spend all my time with my hounds

Here goes, I hate saying what I do as people go "A what??"
I am a Tachograph Inspector, actually job title has just changed to an Onsite Compliance Advisor, basically I am home based, my head office is in Tunbridge Wells, but I live in Watford, 80 miles away. I have a 'book of members, who pay my company for various services (sounds good doesn't it!) These members are haulage companies, or other companies that use lorries, I go in and analyse their tachograph charts and report on what the drivers are doing (drivers love me!!) I can tell their speed, how long they have driven for and if I know the area, where they stopped for a bacon butty! My area is Herts, Beds, NW London, though I do tend to go into Buckinghamshire and Oxford now. I can start when I like and go home when I like, as long as I have checked 60 drivers in that week, so I tend to get up and out early and be home by lunchtime. Kevin is a driving instructor and has his own business, he starts at 10am, but depending on what lessons he has, he is in and out as he only works locally, our dogs are never left for more than 2-3 hours, but they sleep all mornings anyway, when I get home in the winter I get then straight out, if it is hot we don't go out till later at night when it cools. They only have one walk a day, I would love to give them two but need to be out very early to be back in good time to give them a good run in the afternoons.
Whats the betting someone asks what a tachograph is!!!

Hound is a classification of dog, much the same as "Retriever" covers a number of different breeds :i.e. labrador, golden retriever, Duck toller, etc...
Deerhounds are obviously hounds, it's in the name! , some others here have lurchers , which are a sighthound cross, so it's more specific to say hound than dog.
Dictionary definition :
one of any of several breeds of dogs trained to pursue game either by sight or by scent

Relax, Steve, you're not alone! I too work in an office. I turn up at 8:30, tick the day's quota of boxes and nash off home at 4:30; no worries. Rubbish money, but it's a decent place to work and the commute is over one of the nicest country roads in the area if you know where the potholes are. Hounds get walked dead early, then the girls go back out to their kennel for the day leaving Tavish to supervise the cats after I've gone to work until Phil gets up. Yesterday morning, supervision included dismantling a clicker that was lying about, so I guess Phil slept in.

I'm a Cardiac Technician and work at a private hospital from 8:00 to 4:30. I love my job but the environment and management could be definately improved. Over worked and underpaid but the patients are lovely and it is a rewarding job. Until recently Terry used to work part-time at the same hospital but they have since decided he isn't necessary so he is now living a life of leisure by doing all the cleaning, cooking, property maintemance and keeping the dogs company. While he was working the dogs were only left for 2 days of the week, 3 max, and they would go mental when we got home. Not really sure why as they would have just slept all day anyway.
The only time the dogs missed out on a walk was in winter as we can't let them out when it is dark.
I remember one night I forgot to shut the gate from the fenced dog run. The dogs went out to relieve themselves and after 15 minutes or so, I was thinking how quiet it was. You know when you have that sense that something isn't right? So I walked out and to my horror saw the open gate. I rushed up to the gate and thankfully Xena and Lockie came running in. Xena was exhausted from chasing wallabies all over the place. I'm sure she had a ball but it is just too dangerous.
Love the photo DaisyMay

No Cicoch, try analysing tachographs, now that is boring, as is sitting on the M25/M40/M1/M4!!
Well done Houndy, sorry though, no prize! A tachograph chart is a waxy disc that drivers insert into a tachograph head in their cabs, it records: speed, distance, activity, i:e driving/other work and rest. There are laws on how long you can drive before taking a break/overnight rest etc and also for the length of breaks taken. I analyse 3 weeks of these, then put it onto a report form, advising the drivers where he has gone wrong, he then signs it and it is kept for records by the said company. Absolutely tediously boring, but how long it will last I don't know as tachograph charts have been replaced by digital tachographs, the company then buys their own software and downloads the data themselves, they will not need me anymore soon! For the hours I do, I get a good salary, laptop, mobile and I am out and about on my own all the time, so I can't grumble at that. Though sometimes being stuck on the M25 or driving in London can drive you mad.
