TOPIC: how do you get a prefix?

how do you get a prefix? 3 years, 3 months ago #5239

  • houndy
I know nought about showing/breeding ect and was wondering how to get a prefix. If I got one would Murray for example be known as 'Wolfscastle Hela to ........ and Matahari Mouse to .......?
It would be really helpful if the Deerhound club printed some articles in the newsletter on a begineers guide to showing, breeding ect

You can register an affix with the kennel club on line. You need to have three choices
because your first choice may not be accepted if someone else has it or something like it.

I can't remember what the fee is but you do have to pay an annual maintenance fee to keep
your affix.

Once you have your affix approved you can then, if you wish have your dogs names changed
to include the affix and it can be a number of different ways because you can have
to, for, at an in for example. Of course there is also a fee to transfer your dogs name.

As an example, Our stud dog was registered by his breeder as Brackenford Dalesman.
Our affix is Claonaiglen so we transfered his name to Brackenford Dalesman at Claonaiglen.

Hope this helps.

Are you thinking of showing then Trish? It would be nice to see you at some of the
shows. If you want some advice on where to start and how to prepare for the show ring,
I am sure Zoe would be only too pleased to help. Good luck:)

Murray has been neutered due to a undescended testicle so I can't show him - I wouldn't know where to start

When I got Megan, she was to be my companion, because I've admired the breed from a distance for a long time,I didn't rush into it.The showing followed,as a hobby, and to meet likeminded d/h lovers.I admit,I have grown to love it,and look forward to the shows, but it's just a bonus, not the B all and end all.If my dogs didn't enjoy being shown,I wouldn't drag them round the ring,if 1 gets placed, even better!Go on,have a go Houndy,I'd like to meet you and your dogs!Don't be put off by others not welcoming us newbies, they're outnumbered by those stuck in the past.

No excuses, what about little Carys in the future, she's a darling. What Elvee has just
posted is correct. We too started out with Dalesman as a companion but thought I would
like to have a go at dog showing (used to show the horses) and got bitten by the showing
bug because it has a good social side to it as well. You meet people with the same
interest and love of the breed as yourself and you make a lot of good friends.

Give it a go, if you don't like it you don't have to continue with it but I bet you meet
some nice, welcoming, helpful people as nearly all Deerhound owners are.

It would be lovely for Keri to have one of Rinda's pups in the showring wouldn't it?

Keri would love it. Hand on heart, there is nothing better than seeing a dog you have
bred being shown. As a breeder it makes you feel you have made it. Our biggest thrill,
apart from Orrin being made up to champion, was watching Albyn, who we bred and is owned
by one person and handled by someone else, go Best of Breed at Crufts.

I was bawling my eyes out it was so exciting and emotional.

After we lost Dana all I wanted was another Deerhound to grace our lives. Showing wasn't foremost in my mind but Jacobite gave me encouragement (and a beautiful puppy) and we haven't looked back. I love showing this magnificent breed. It certainly is a bug that bites hard!

Showing is fun, but it can get to be a drag if your dog gets constantly overlooked. Think about trying lure-coursing. It's as much if not more fun. Course, not every dog will deign to chase plastic. But you owe it to your dog to go try it at least once. They generally love it.

Also, I don't think there are those who are "stuck in the past" nor are they unwelcoming, they just have learned through experience that there are those who for one readson or another do detrimental things to dogs. Ever hear of "puppy mills"? None of us is perfect and all knowing. Except me, errr no! The past is the foundation of the future. I haven't seen anyone not be welcoming. Just the stating of oopinions and we can all learn through sharing, even if we strongly disagree.
