I don't know what it is but everytime we meet up with a Lab about 90% of the time they always go for Mack or Daisy. It doesn't happen with any other breed. I wondered if any of you had noticed that?

Generally, Ive never (OK, one exception) experienced labs as the kind and loving dogs they are always said to be. I dont like to meet labs when Im walking my dogs.
There might be some explanations for that.

Labradors are pretty bad at body language, specially the back ones. Lips, ears nose and eyes play an important role in body language. Lips, nose and eyes are all black, (or brown, or yellow) and the ears can hardly move.

Labradors are easily awailable everywhere, inexperienced dog owners who all of a sudden come to think "I want a dog" - they may have the best chances to find a lab. for sale around the next corner.

It is usually labs especially the brown ones that we have trouble with and the owners are just as bad

About 30% of Labradors that we meet when out walking have a go at Ben and often the owners are very ignorant and blame Ben for responding when all that he does is defend himself by holding their dog down and shouting at it. This happens even when Ben is on a lead and theirs are not but they still blame Ben. There was one particularly nasty incident that I have already described on this forum.

I also find that most Collies attack Ben and are even worse than labradors. I have not learnt how to avoid this other than to keep well clear of Labradors and Collies whenever possible.

Sorry I have to stand up for Labs here. I have known the odd one or 2 that have been bad uns ...
but I have had 4 of my own, my sister has 3 , and I know loads of others and none were or are nasty and vindictive animals. If one were to say that 1% of every breed was antisocial, The fact that they are the most popular breed means that statistically there should be more nasty ones than any other breed.

I don't know whether that particular piece of science would stand up to much scrutiny, but I always say it's the owners fault anyway !!! (apart from collies - they're all psychos )

My yong hounds can sometimes be a little too playful with my 13 year old german wirehair. He cant realy defend himself anymore, so I use an empty bottle from dishwashing soap, they come with a valve top that can be closed. It is cleaned for soap, and filled with water. A NO, if it does not work immediately, it is followed by a splash of water, and that helps.
Some days ago i came with my 4 dogs on the leash, and a little french bulldog with a big ego came, ofleash, to attack my dogs. That could have costed his life, but I gave him a NO and a splash of water, and that made him turn around.

We had our first obedience lesson today and the dog that reacted the most (and vice versa) was a Rotti. As soon as it clapped eyes on Lockie it went balistic and Lockie began to posture.
During the class we stayed at opposite ends but there were times when they were close ie weaving between dogs. Luckily the instructor was fully aware of both our dogs and stayed close or between them during these exercises. There was one episode though when the Rotti was doing cartwheels on the lead infront of Lockie trying to have a go and Lockie just stood there, though he was ready if need be.
On the other hand there was a black lab there which the woman brought over after lesson. I was wary but she seemed confident about her dog approaching and they had a sniff. She was fully aware of why we were there. The lab was fine.

I would totally agree that its the owner's fault. In all cases the dogs ran up to Ben and instantly were nose to nose with him. They were erect, ears and tails up and when Ben didn't back down they went for him. In virtually all cases the owners are very unpleasant and unreasonable which I think speaks volumes. I've met some great people with Labradors and have never had problems from their dogs.

Obviously not allLabs are bad and there are some other breeds too but I am basing the answer to Mrs Mc's post on my experiences and I do find that it is mostly brown labs especially if there are 2 of them. But the main culprit is the owner who seems to think that it is ok for their dogs to have a go

Yes it is always the brown or black that go for Mack and Daisy. Don't get me wrong I like labs but this is just what seems to happen to us on walks.

Yep, it's pet Labradors that cause trouble every time. The show Labs and the working Labs seem ok - maybe they're better socialised?

Such a pity - they're nice dogs in every other way.

What a shame...it must spoil your walk if you have to keep a look out for those labs! I must admit I squirted the Rotti with water when it went for Chris' puppy Logon, poor Logon did not know what to do, bless him.
A German Shepherd frightened Elsie Grey on the beach and she looks very worried when we see one now Also poor Daisy May has been attacked twice by a Staff ( & the owner just said I did not know there were any other dogs about!!) We were in a field and Daisy May only got away because she is so fast!
She was also attacked quite badly by a Japanese Akita....that just flew across the field out of the blue and jumped on her back....she was just playing with Elsie grey!! No warning and the bloke just sauntered over and did not attempt to control his dog!!! I shouted at the dog in my best teacher voice and he let go, but poor Daisy May was still screaming Best I don't repeat what I said to the man and I had to stand up on my tip toes to look him in the eye......
Oohhhh dear...I do believe I have been ranting away here....sorry

Anyway, I do hope your darling Deeries do not have any more trouble from those labs

Re:Labradors.. 3 years, 3 months ago #6547

How frightening, this is the trouble there are too many dangerous dogs in society. My 'pain in the bum' dogs are staffs. My Border terrier was attacked twice by the same staff and he doesn't like other dogs at all now, he is ok with bitches, but I keep him on a lead now when dogs are about. Had a lab attack Murphy once, Murph was on a lead, the lab wasn't. I think it is because DH's are so big other dogs see thm as a threat, we've had this discussion before.

9/10 times it's the owner more than the dog. I do find Alsations tend to bark furiously, but not back it up. There is one who walks on the golf course, I know I can let Murphy off and he doesn't bother with it, he did run over once and it barked and reared up and he just came back, he is non confrontational.
