TOPIC: My hounds say 'thank you to Lurch'

I read what Lurch makes for her dogs (big stockpot of veg and mince) so thought I'd make some this evening for their supper. I used minced lamb, spuds and carrot/swede - they loved it!

Carys has had 2 bowls and she says a special thank you cause she's a growing girly

Sometimes I will save the veg peelings, boil them to form a “broth” add a little stock from a cube, then add that to the hounds complete food. They seem to recommend it!!

This is more time consuming – if you are using chicken pieces get a whole chicken & strip the flesh off it. Put the carcase into a large pot & boil, then simmer, (I know its home made chicken soup)! I put that into jars in the fridge & mix that into their complete, (I suppose it could be frozen). They will sell their soles for that!

Word of warning re: potatoes

If a potato gets green patches on it, that contains solanine, which is very bad for both humans and dogs, though dogs seem to have a particularly bad reaction to it. Potato sprouts also have a good deal of solanine in it. You wouldn't eat them because they taste extremely foul, though dogs can be dumb that way. Solanine isn't cooked away; it's stable at the temperatures we cook potatoes at.

You'll want to cut away green patches on potatoes before you cook them just because it doesn't taste good, but there's not enough in there to do you any real harm, either, at least not in a single potato. You should certainly cut away any sprouts, too, for the same reason.

So... if your dog gets into a bunch of sprouted potatoes, and is dumb enough to eat them, things may not turn out well. And one baked potato isn't going to kill your dog; there's just not that much solanine in it. And since the solanine is only on the skin, a dog can safely eat peeled potatoes until it hurls.

In fact, many dog food manufacturers put potatoes in their dog foods as an inexpensive and tasty filler. Such things are perfectly safe because they start with peeled potatoes.

We feed ours raw but every now and then they get a cooked treat. I mix up a kg of chicken mince, cook a cup of rice and mix it it, half a sweet potato and broccoli ground up, and mix all together.
On top I pour a cup of gravy and then bake for an hour. They love it!

We do that quite often - i get fresh turky carcasses off a local farm,
often its only the breast meat thats been took off, so the dogs get everything,
i stick it in the pressure cooker add some garlic and mint and the dogs go nuts for it,
quite often you can boil a carcass a couple of times,
or i sometimes insted of carcasses i will use ox heart, my dogs kill for that lol.

a couple of tips for people - be carful with stock cubes as theres quite often a lot of salt added to them, and dogs cant digest veg well - so its often better to stick them in a blender first,it helps release some of the goodness of the veg

So glad the dogs enjoy thir stew. You know, to make it cheaper you can always buy Tesco Value mince, after all our hounds can afford to take in a bit of fat, I wouldn't eat it though.

I save peelings, especially clean spuds, mine don't like swede, but would you believe they love sprouts, greens, parsnips, carrots, they even eat mushrooms, garlic, aubergines and asparagus!! so spoilt, but if it is left over why not.

I've done the chicken thingy John, I've done it for us too for a soup. Now I do it for them we have 2 meals from it thn the rewt to the dogs, they adore their chicken.

They've just had cheese on toast!!!

I use Omega for working dogs as complete, three large cups of that mixed with their stew and he never leaves a bit anymore
