Yes I have a dog flap for my 2 dogs. It's a "Plexidor XL", which is a quality door with a metal frame. Not cheap ( approx £350 ). I confess, although installed ready for use I havn't actually used it yet as I need to sort out a little more fencing in order to prevent them from having complete freedom to great anyone/everyone approaching my front door - suprisingly there are a few ( only a few ) humans who might want to deliver something to me & do not wish to be licked to death in the process ! CiCoch's posting made me laugh "..isn't that called a door" ! Not far wrong, mine is fitted into my door & occupies 75% of the original door, so why not just leave the door open in the first place.? I did ponder that one myself, but when it rains your carpet gets soaked, whereas the dog door closes immediately ( it's double saloon type doors rather than a flap ). I had a previous normal size dog flap for my previous collie cross dog, which I purchased when he got old & needed to go to the toilet more often/during the night - it was brilliant, & improved matters for both my collie & myself. I got the new dog door to enable my deerhound Amy plus Charlie to chase the wild rabbits without waiting for me to open the door - by which time the rabbit tends to be miles away. The opening in the XL Plexidoor is approx 60cm x 40cm (24" x 16" ).
Go for it !

Err yes, I also have a Plexidor although I only have the L size as it was fitted originally for my weimaraner.

Brice is a large lad but he still uses it on a daily basis as he has since being a pup and following the others in and out. He will often limbo out through that when the main conservatiry door is open

I'm with CiCoch We just leave the door open. The joys of living out bush, I don't have the security concerns plus Lockie is a good deterrant. Terry did make a dog door in the wooden laundry door by cutting out a large chunk of the door and using the cut out piece as a sliding door in a slot. Does that make sense? It was for when Bree is in heat so that we could seperate but still allow all dogs outside access.

I can't see how having a Deerhound sized dog flap would be very secure ... the opening to Mac's kennel box is just big enough to allow him in without scraping his withers, and I can easily crawl through that hole on my hands and knees. I would be worried that a burglar would use it.

I remember there was a discussion on the DH List and they use normal large dog flaps but lift them higher, so rather than the dog bending over they have to lift their feet. The top of the dog door would be level with their neck.
BTW Terry didn't use the door chunk but rather a piece of ply so it is much thinner with the slots being on the inside.

Can you imagine coming home to find the house full of everyone elses dogs + cats, stray children etc, etc, because of the huge dog flap!
