Ben, as are most Deerhounds is often fast asleep and will answer to nothing. Shout "Walkies" no reaction, "Dinner" no reaction, "Ben" no reaction.

But if I shout "Rabbit" or "Squirrel" or just "Coming up the Garden" he jumps up and runs towards me like an F1 Car off the starting line!

Are they just resting and ignoring unwanted interruptions or are they really sleeping very deeply but certain words penetrate? I often wonder.

Mine will stir if they hear either the car keys or if I go to the front door. They are pretty good if I yell 'all hounds out now'

Same here. In fact they will run inside, if they are out, if they hear the biccy tin.
Selective hearing indeed!!

My little Penticton sometimes sleeps very deep, and is sometimes hard to get awake.

Ive read somewhere that "if a piece of emmenthaler cheese directly in front of the nose does not help after one minute, the deerhound is dead"

My two react if I put my coat on! I dont need to say a word! They do have selective hearing, then again they are both boys!

Ah, the good old cheese test; the definitive test for a dead Deerhound, that is. Although I usually try it again with some Roquefort, just to be certain.

Mine know what we're doing, by what coat I put on! Also can hear the tin foil of the cheese from a mile away!
