Clunie was out for a short run with Phin our lurcher tonight, the first real one since the all clear. Flat out on a small wooden bridge, it was damp, she slipped, she now has a damaged shoulder (we think). Has anyone ever tried carrying a 35kg deerhound home? Believe me it was not easy. The good news is that while it seems to be very sore at present there is no obvious signs of damage so she may have got away with a strain/sprain or bad bruising. But she may be back at the vets tomorrow depending on how she looks in the morning.

We love our dogs and think we take good care of them. But this is looking horribly like history repeating itself. Kerry, our deerhound/whippet cross who died just over a year ago had a long period when she would injure herself, then as soon as she was given the ok to start running she would go mad and do something else. We got a bit embarassed at the number of late night visits to the vets. Thank goodness for insurance.

Allan (Vicky is out on the wine tonight - she calls it a bookclub!)

On dogs the shouder blade is not fixed to the rest of the skeleton, it is sometimes a blessing and sometimes a damn.
If yo ucant see anything broke, (let the Vet make an x-ray anyway) it is mot likely a strain.
Put something cold on it, she will not like it, but it helps if she can keep it on even if it is only for a few minutes.
A strain will take some time and patience to get rid of. Please keep us updated.

My little deer hurt himself running against a wolfhound (could as well have been a rock, is almost the same) He cried for several minutes, and could not support any weight on the right foreleg. X rays proved nothing to be broken. He was very tender about that leg for several days. A dog masseur was able to make things better, it was also she who recommended the cold pack.

Oh dear she is one of them who always seem to be in the wars. I hope it just a strain after not running for a while. Get better soon.

Oh Damn!! Poor Clunie. Here's hoping that it is only bruising or strain. They can get themselves in the wars sometimes. Last week Lockie's leg slipped on our large wooden stairs going onto the "lawn" (more dirt than lawn ) Anyway his leg got stuck between the steps. I heard him whimper and saw him trying to yank his leg free. I rushed out, scared he might break it but he managed to get it free but took all the skin off the front of his leg nearly to the bone. It didn't pull him up at all but the wound was weepy for a while.

Have you got any arnica tablets in the house? I know, I know, homoeopathy's just pure dead magic with no scientific basis (comes of having married a molecular biologist), but the dogs don't know that and it seems to work on them anyway. If you've got some, try giving her a 6c tablet every four hours for a day. It should get the bruising down if that's all that's wrong with her. And if it doesn't work, it won't have done any harm.

I'm so sorry to hear about Clunie hurting herself. Just when things were looking up after being sick. Lots of ear rubs and cuddles should help. I used to tell my kids that I was wrapping them in love and when I kissed them the pain would be better. Worked for years.

How is darling Clunie now? Arnica cream is good for helping to bring out the bruising. Lots of ear rubs

Hi

Thanks for all the kind messages and advice for Clunie.
I'm glad to say that she seems to be back to normal again. I think that it must have just been bad bruising. Thankfully we had some metacam in the house..
Unfortunately all of our dogs seem to have fallen foul of a nasty virus that is doing its rounds in our little village -sickness etc. Not too good.
I have to say that Clunie was the only one of the dogs who actually had the sense to refuse her food until she felt better.
She started eating again today and is more like herself - so hopefully bad things only happen in threes and that will be her run of ill luck over!! Fingers crossed!!

Clunie and Xena must come from the same mold. Xena was outside in the run playing with Bree and Lockie when suddenly we could hear her screaming. We rushed outside to find that she must have twisted her hip (again ) She wouldn't put any weight on it. The poor girl. Anyway she now limping on it but it looks like she will be inside for a few days now until it settles.

Oh poor Xena
I hope that she gets better soon. I always just feel so useless as we can't tell that they will be OK and not to worry - and I always feel so bad when they howl when they are in pain.
Love to Xena.
Also I hope taht Lockie is feeling better after his leg injury.
lol

Thanks Clunie As for Lockie, I don't think he even felt it. He was more intent on getting free.
That virus sounds nasty. I hope they all get over it quickly. Is it like Kennel Cough?

Hi Brollachan

I'm glad to say that the virus in the village just seems to last a couple of days or so and just makes them very sick and/or runny. Not pleaseant for either them or us! Doesn't seem to be kennel cough related. (I hope not anyway - that's the last thing that Clunie would need now!!)
She loved the snow when I took her for a short walk - just wish I'd taken the camera too..
Never mind - next time!
Cheers
