When we go camping we take two XXL metal crates. They weigh a ton! When we took them last time due to the fact we cant put them over the axle the van occassionally started snaking. I notice at a recent show that there were some Mastiff's in a fabric crate. They had metal poles to strenghten them.

At camp sites at night we put our dogs in crates in the awning.(it is heated).

Does any one have any experience of these. Would they be strong enough or would I wake up and find them missing!!

Depends on the dogs. We started Lockie in a soft crate, but being a puppy he ended up chewing the zip off. This was not when it was closed but when we left the flap open
We did get another one but Lockie grew out of it. If your dog rolls heavily onto the side, it is possible for the crate to roll. Personally I like them but it would be advisable to test them at home first to see if they are suitable for you.

I didn't know you could get them big enough.

Re:Crate Question 3 years, 2 months ago #8568

I have two. The flat top ones don't work but the curve tops are fine. DH can do DH stretch inside the shape. Yes they can roll, but the dogs just get used to it and roll with them. The go into them and flump down and a nice DH sized shape pokes out the side. Just means you need to allow space for them.

They sound perfect. Are they any particular brand?

I'm sure that "Soft Crate" is a US brand. They make them large enough for a DH. Mine is an Aussie brand but is now too small for Lockie but would be fine for my bitches. I intend to use it when Bree comes into season to keep the big boy away

This soft sided crate is large enough for my dh to turn around in and stand upright in. I plan to keep in my vehicle for whenever we are out and need someplace out of sun or just a quiet place for Dog to feel secure. Folds flat and comes with a zippered portfolio type case. Have had no chewing problems but wouldn't trust a puppy.

Canine campers are sold at the Champ shows here in the UK but in our experience I wouldn't like to trust a dog to stay in it. Charlotte is on her second one for 'Ells bells (the Whippet). Ellied chewed the zip on the first one so it wouldn't shut properly and on the second she raked her claws down the mesh at the front and ripped a hole in it.

I have been able to sew (sort of) the rip up but We wouldn't trust her to be left in it now.

We had a caravan last year with good intentions of Storm sleeping in his crate in the awning (heated of course) - it lasted about five minutes of us putting him to bed for the night and him howling before we let him in the van - he went sraight down on his bed (blocked the whole corridor meaning many a dark stumble over sleeping DH in the night to use the loo!) and never moved a muscle for the whole night (in case we realised he was there and put him out again)- he never went back in his crate after that at nights and once back home followed us up the stairs dragging his orthopedic mattress with him (artistic license) and took up residence in our bedroom - so whilst it was a lovely feeling the whole pack asleep in the van - it's a slippery slope!!!!!

I had a “collapsible metal crate” that we would put in the awning & left the CV door half open & the dogs seemed happy to sleep without making too much fuss

I was more worried with "rising damp" from the grass & wanted them off the grass

I couldn't steal the photo from ebay but here is the link.
The roundy top one is the closest to mine. I have given it a hammering over the past two years and not worries at all.

Thanks folks. I will definitely get one of those for Mack. I may wait a while until I get Daisy one as I think she will do what Charlottes Whippet did and rip the netting with her paw. She does tend to paw everything anyway!
