Is anybody elses deerhound have a strong guarding instinct? Eris will bark if she is in the car and people walk past, she will bark even at people she loves and knows well isn't that right Daisymay. She will also bark when she lays on the floor ie in front of the bench at shows it is quite embarrasing When she stands up or is out for a walk or with other dogs she is an angel:cheer: She is very sensitive to "strange" people she will be very unsure of them, bait diggers especially. She will make a bee line for them and bark. She can be a good house dog when she hears certain people(drunks) walk(stagger)past the house she will bark but not at normal people.

No, mine don't! But, as soon as the sun goes down, he barks in the garden constantly, he can smell the foxes, but he just barks at the wind, the trees, his own shadow. I cannot leave him out there on his own, or the neighbours will complain. In summer it is worse as the back door is always open. He prowls the garden at night, tail held high, ears pricked, barking. He never barks at humans though and I am pretty sure if someone were to break in, he wouldn't even get up to look!

Mine barks at dogs we meet when out walking, I think he's saying "Lets Play". He also barks each evening at the terrier trying to goad him into playing, especially if the terrier is on the sofa and there's not room for him.

If anyone comes to the house or he hears a sound outside, not a murmer and he doesn't stir a bit.

Loki Pokey Paws barks to go out, barks to tell us a cat wants to come in, barks if you ignore him, barks to get you to play with him, barks at his toys, barks at his bones........you get the picture. I'm sure before we got him, someone said Deerhounds don't bark much.

When you are out, do you fear that your dog might bark. If so, your dog is probably picking up the signal from you. When you do not vocalize your discomfort your dog does so on your behalf. "Part of the Pack"

Bree has always been a barker and Lockie has become one two. Only if people/dogs walk past. This doesn't happen often but occasionally the family up the road will all go out with the dogs for an evening walk.
Should add they don't bark when out and about or in the car, only on the property.

Oooppss... that makes it sound as if Eris thinks I am a drunk or a 'strange' person I Really I am not, at least I have convinced myself that I am 'normal' Eris has barked at me when I have stood next to the car and she loves me, bless her

Elsie Grey barks at herself in the mirror...late at night in our hotel(night before Crufts!), thanks Elsie Grey

Apart from that my girls only bark when they are playing. They just nudge me if some one is at the door...... no good for a burglar deterent!!

Mine is not only the barkiest Deerhound I've ever met but today we discovered he sings along to the bagpipes as well.

All of our Deerhounds bark at strangers and to take it one stage further 2 of them would definately bite if someone they didn't know walked across the cattle grid and through the gate onto 'their patch'. They have travelled all over the countrt to shows, had judges go over them, check their teeth etc, had people and other dogs step over them and never so much as curled a lip but enter their place at your own risk.

Not sure really. Once the neighbour had a tradesman in the garden and he came up to our fence quite quickly to ask something and Mack did a really low growl and stepped in front of me but apart from that he seems friendly to every one.

They would have to step over Daisy too but she would stick out her paw and trip them up as she does to everyone else

I think it is although Mack never bothers. Daisy always does it and I never learn and get caught every time.

Yep, ours do it as well, usually when I am carrying something that is spillable.

The sticking out paw trick is something that I really like about Deerhounds. A friend says that anything that goes back to Ch Ardkinglas Enoch is more likely to do this - apparently, Enoch was a great one for saying 'I'm not finished with you yet' with his paw if you thought he'd had enough stroking. Worked every time.
