TOPIC: The visitor that makes Murphy bark

The visitor that makes Murphy bark 3 years, 2 months ago #8957

We have a fox around here. We think he has a den under a shed 2 doors up, whenever the sun is out, he gets on the roof and sunbathes. They have 2 small children and he is often on their lawn when the kids are playing in the garden, he is quite tame.
As I speak, at 15.25 on a sunny Sunday afternoon, Murphy knows he is there, although he can't see him, he is barking frantically and sniffing the air!

I have just taken this photo. Better go, neighbours will be moaning about Murphy!

Those Foxes are lovely. We have a big HooHa in Tassie at the moment as someone has brought foxes over the strait onto our "pristine isle" The governement has spent millions trying to track and kill these elusive creatures. I think Foxes are very pretty.

I think they are beautiful too but I bet my hens and the newborn lambs don't think so!

What are the implications likely to be for native species, Sam, for example ground nesting birds and do you already have any fox like predators on Tassie. Looking at pictures of the island, they could be very difficult to erradicate if they became well established, could be a job for some keen Deerhounds perhaps.

That's the problem Alan. The foxes, if they get established will wipe out many native species. Our largest native predator is the Devil, but with that in decline it wouldn't take much for the foxes to take over. There are lots of issues though in how they are trying to kill/capture them. They have been using poisoned bait which obviously isn't going to discriminate between species. Other animals such as eagles and devils will also get poisoned.
I don't understand why someone would want to introduce them. There is plenty to hunt without adding to a possible environmental disaster.

I took this in September 2004 from my bedroom window (wish I would have had a better camera at hand). The foxes would come out to play in the sun on some staging used to let off fireworks every afternoon oblivious to the fact they were 50 meters from a main road, an adult training center & also a fire station.

I don't understand it either, its like sabotage is the aim in life for some people. Poison will be a disaster as any bait station that a fox can access will be available for lots of others. We just never seem to learn.
