TOPIC: What a day

What a day 2 years, 7 months ago #15539

Here was our day.
We were woken sunday morning by a loud crash from the deck. We both thought it was just the canvas pop up pergola must have broken free and hit the side of the house. I looked at the clock and just caught it was 7:00am before the power died. Terry got up to investigate. 2 large wattle trees had fallen. One across the deck and the other across the power lines, snapping a line. According to the neighbours we put on quite a fireworks display with sparks, flames and smoke.
I rang the power company and within 2 hours, 2 linesmen came out. The weather was horrendous with horizontal rain caused by strong gusty winds. I have a new found admiration for these guys having to scale tall ladders which were hanging precariously in the winds trying to fix the line. They were here for a couple of hours. After fixing the line they had to go and turn the power back on. !/2 hour later they returned and said the power would be off for a long time due to the main transponders going taking the power out from the whole district.
We were very lucky in that the tree that fell across the deck did not damage the house. It did crash on top of the large glass table and the pop up pergola, but overall the damage was minimal.
The power lines had saved our carport and car as that tree was resting on the ines.
The boys finally returned at 10:00pm and restored the power. They had one hell of a day. They also warned us of landslides on the road.

The water here is unbelievable. Water is gushing through from all directions. The ground is so sodden and soft. What is normall a hard rock surface has gone spongy.
I am counting our blessings though. No damage to the house, and the car was saved.

Bloody hell, Sam, that's a bit of a horror story. Sounds like missing Midsomer Murders was the least of your worries. Good to know that you guys are OK - try to keep it that way!

What a way to wake up! And here I feel selfpityness for bein waked up unsoft by a big wet Irish Wolfhound nose!
Seems like you have yourself some kind of weather that is able of both this and that. Good that nothing really bad happened, it is not fun when big trees fall in a storm.

The insurance company have been great. Because we spent the day cutting up and removing the tree, they have waived the $300 excess. I guess because our claim is not huge, probably under $2000 they aren't even sending out an assessor and taking our word for everything (at least for now) Though it won't stop them putting the premium up 5% for the claim but at least we don't have to front the excess.

Glad you're all safe. This must be the second time in several months you've had a weather event like this and I thought it was all heatwaves and droughts in your part of the world.

Apart from being very sore from all the cutting and lifting we are fine The weather has certainly been WET this winter and from what I've heard they expect it to rain for another 20 days. In saying that, yesterday and today have been dry and sunny.
I went to work today and took it slowly as there had been many landslides and flooding on the road which had washed a lot of mud about. I just wish the councils could keep on top of all the pot holes about. And I'm not talking about on our country roads but in the main suburbs. I will end up taking out the front end or blowing a tyre soon. They are massive.
