Did anyone see the national geographic program on Sky last night about Wolves (and Bears) at Yellowstone National park?
A battle is ongoing between Wolves and Bears to become top predator. Bears who are solitary creatures will often take a young Deer/Bison whenever thay can but also have many other food sources. A Wolf pack are the best hunters as they hunt in packs and hunting is their only food source.
Since Wolves were re-introduced into Yellowstone the Bears have developed a new strategy. They follow the Wolf pack when they are hunting and then wait for the Wolves to make a kill and then steal the prey. The Wolves attempt to drive the Bear away but if the Bear is large enough then the Wolves usually give up and leave the Bear with the kill.
Some Bears have now even stopped hibernating in winter as they've found that they can survive the winter by living on the kills made by the Wolves.
If the program is repeated, as is usual, then its well worth watching. It was titled something like "Battleground in Yellowstone".
