I was going to say Join the club!!! Deerhounds aren't known for their perfect recall. ome on here manage it, I've yet to work it out, if he sees something, he's off!!!

they will usually only come back if it suits them to do so Murray has a good recall ATM but I am fully aware that once he hits his 'teens' that will change!

I hope this is helpful. I have found my deerhound bitch turning 2years on March 20th has gotten much better in the last 6 months at recall. I am very closely bonded to my girl and she doesn't like it if she doesn't know where I am. When something gets her attention we have compromised and she will run do a quick circuit around the other dog or person, I will say firmly Get over here and she will race back to me as I have turned and walk away in the opposite direction.

I am hoping for help with the following:
What I need to work on is cars. I was in the park yesterday (not open to public vehicles) Cailean spotted a Park truck backing out of a driveway and ran straight for the back of the truck. I was screaming "Get over here." Fortunately the driver must have heard me yell and stopped just in time, while my silly git gaily thought she was going to say hello to the truck! Not the first time she has decided to approach a moving vehicle. I don't know quite how to instill a healthy fear/ respect for cars. When crossing the street I always stop, say Cars and wait for a clear opening.
Good luck with the recall.

Hi Guys

Well I hear this from deerhound people all the time, but I have never had a problem. I got my first DH as a rescue (18mths) in 1984 and by the time I moved to Sydney and met DH people he had an open title in 2 states. Once I met the breeders etc in NSW I started hearing all the things DH won't do. If I had heard this stuff before I met my first I would never have taken him home:( maybe maybe not. That was real love at first sight accross a crowd pound.

I train them the same as everything else I have ever owned (multi mixups!). The only thing I put more effort into now is 'attention'. Working dogs are born with it. Sighthound have 3 seconds or is that goldfish. They learn though! The best structured course is that American woman Terri thingy(?) I will check out her name and let you know. Of note also is that I have only had one DH from a pup and he has been the least good!

FYI I have only had Caile (2 1/2yo) since October last year and after ignoring me completely for about 3 weeks she is coming in blindingly fast now. She is an exception to the attention rule too!

I wonder if sometimes people hear the 'they don't' and then accept the lesser response from them. Deeries aren't stupid - they will work to rule if they are able!!

Lockie's recall is really very good and I have been able to call him back when he has been flying over to the neighbours fence after a cat. Food is what works for him. Maybe carry some treats in your pocket. Call in a high, happy voice and reward. My problem is "stay".
Lockie is very food motivated which makes it easier, Bree on the other hand was much harder to train as she wasn't.

Miss Cailean Adair o'Druimhaven is a star!
Yesterday we were at park off leash when we both spotted 2 dogs coming towards us. I very calmly, assertively loudly said "Stop" then "Get over here", she looked at dogs, then me and trotted over to me.
Woo hoo! A milestone. Lots of hugs and treats were her reward.
(I put treats in a vitamin bottle so I can shake it to make noise, a great attention getter. She didn't need shaken treats this time either.) Mommy's clever girl.

I like the shakey treats in bottle idea - think I'll try that... Storm is not at all food oriented (we feed him too well I think!) but he will recall to a whistle (an actual gun dog whistle) but the only problem is anyones whistle will do - so if we're on the forest and there's a whistle nearby off he goes enthusiastically jumping over gorse, ears flapping and disappears! (follow by shouts of surprise!) I know you can get them in different pitches - but then there's going to be a probability ratio involved of the likelihood of someone having the same pitch as me - I don't think I can explain that one to Storm!

Hi Fern. I use a whistle for Elsie Grey & treats. Every time she is fed at home I blow on the whistle...neighbours must think I am mad! She soon associated the whistle with food & now runs back to me for a treat...it's great Good luck!
